Czech Republic: Znojmo Knights edge Vysocina Gladiators in dramatic battle for first place

The Znojmo Knights (8-1) survived a thrilling finish against the Vysocina Gladiators (7-1), kicking a field goal as time expired to secure a dramatic 30-28 victory in a showdown between the top two teams in the Czech Snapbacks League.

Teams trade early blows

Both defenses started strong, forcing punts on the opening possessions. The first breakthrough came from the Gladiators, who marched down the field behind quarterback Vít Bezecný before Šimon Krahula broke free on a 28-yard touchdown run for a 7-0 lead.

The Knights answered immediately. Volodymyr Hrynkiv moved the offense through the air with key completions to Igor Mašlanka and Zachary DeNike before finding Jakub Čermák for a 31-yard touchdown that tied the game.

Knights take halftime lead

The home team gained momentum in the second quarter. After the defense forced a punt, Hrynkiv led another scoring drive, mixing passes with runs from David Galko.

A 26-yard completion to Vojtěch Vojtěch set up a five-yard touchdown pass to Mašlanka, giving Znojmo a 14-7 advantage heading into halftime.

The Gladiators struck quickly after the break when Petr Kratochvíl intercepted Hrynkiv on the opening play of the third quarter. The turnover led directly to a touchdown as Krahula scored for the second time, trimming the deficit to 14-13.

Hrynkiv responded with another touchdown pass to Mašlanka, but the visitors answered again. Krahula capped another drive with his third touchdown, and Bezecný connected with Jan Leština for the two-point conversion to level the score at 21-21.

Last-second kick seals it

The decisive quarter featured even more twists.

A bad snap by the Gladiators gave the Knights excellent field position, and Hrynkiv capitalized with a 31-yard touchdown pass to Denis Kadrle for a 27-21 lead.

The drama was far from over. Stanislav Lepič intercepted Hrynkiv with less than three minutes remaining, setting up another Gladiators score. Krahula powered into the end zone for his fourth touchdown of the game, and the extra point put Vysocina ahead 28-27 with 1:39 left.

But Hrynkiv had one final answer. Completions to DeNike, Čermák and Mašlanka moved the Knights into range, and with four seconds remaining, Oldřich Helebrant calmly drilled the game-winning field goal.

The victory keeps the Znojmo Knights on top of the Snapbacks League standings after one of the season’s most dramatic finishes.
