D.C. Defenders survive late surge against Battlehawks, secure third straight victory

In a thrilling matchup, the D.C. Defenders (3-1) edged the St. Louis Battlehawks (2-2) 28-22 in a game that showcased resilience and determination from both teams. The Defenders controlled much of the action, but a late surge from the Battlehawks made for a tense finish.

Strong start for D.C.
St. Louis kicked off the game with a solid drive, culminating in a 51-yard field goal from Tucker McCann. However, D.C. quickly responded with a sharp offensive series led by quarterback Jordan Ta’amu, who connected with Keke Coutee for a 14-yard touchdown, putting the Defenders on the board first.

Battlehawks strike back
The second quarter saw St. Louis find their rhythm when Hakeem Butler took a screen pass and sprinted 75 yards for a touchdown. After a missed extra point, D.C. regained control with a 56-yard field goal from Matt McCrane, extending their lead to 10-9. Ta’amu continued to shine, throwing another touchdown to Ty Scott, making it 17-6.

Defensive stand seals the win
Despite a late push from the Battlehawks, including a touchdown run from Kevon Latulas, D.C. held firm. Ta’amu’s steady play, combined with a safety from Devonnsha Maxwell, helped the Defenders maintain their lead. In the final moments, an interception by Sam Kidd sealed the victory for D.C., securing their third consecutive win.

Ta’amu finished with 204 passing yards, two touchdowns, and 61 rushing yards, while Jarveon Howard led St. Louis with 85 rushing yards. The Defenders will look to continue their winning streak when they host the Birmingham Stallions next Friday night.
