UFL: D.C. Defenders dominate Renegades for fifth straight win

The D.C. Defenders (5-1) continued their impressive run with a commanding 24-6 victory over the Dallas Renegades (3-3) on Saturday. Quarterback Jordan Ta’amu shined with three first-half touchdowns, while the Defenders‘ defense stifled the Renegades throughout the game, marking Dallas’s third consecutive loss after a strong 3-0 start.

Renegades struggle early

The Renegades had the first opportunity to score, but things quickly went south. Quarterback Austin Reed was knocked out of the game after a big hit, forcing backup Luke Lehnen to step in. Lehnen managed to scramble for 21 yards, moving Dallas into scoring position. However, kicker Colton Theaker’s 47-yard attempt hit the upright, leaving the game scoreless and setting the tone for missed opportunities.

D.C. takes control

The Defenders wasted no time capitalizing on the Renegades‘ misfortune. Briley Moore caught a short pass and turned it into a 52-yard gain, setting up Ta’amu’s first touchdown pass to Erik Ezukanma, who made an impressive twisting catch in the end zone. This marked Ezukanma’s first touchdown of the season.

After a defensive stop, D.C. quickly struck again. Ta’amu led another sharp drive, connecting with Ty Scott and Braylon Sanders for key completions. On fourth-and-two, he found Mason Fairchild for a 13-yard touchdown, extending the lead to 14-0.

Things went from bad to worse for Dallas when Reed threw an interception to Deandre Baker, giving the Defenders prime field position. Ta’amu capitalized immediately, throwing a one-handed touchdown pass to Cornell Powell, pushing the lead to 21-0. Matt McCrane added a 56-yard field goal, and D.C. went into halftime with a commanding 24-0 lead.

Renegades fight back

The Renegades finally found their rhythm in the third quarter. Reed connected with Deontay Burnett for a 53-yard gain, and Tyler Vaughns caught a 14-yard touchdown pass, bringing Dallas within 18 points after a failed two-point conversion.

However, the Defenders responded with a bold fake punt that kept their drive alive, showcasing their confidence. Despite a strong defensive effort from Dallas, including a spectacular one-handed interception by Qwynterrio Cole, they couldn’t capitalize on their opportunities.

Defenders’ defense shines

The Defenders‘ defense proved to be as formidable as advertised, keeping Reed under pressure and limiting his effectiveness. Micah Baskerville and Deontay Anderson led the unit with six tackles each, while Dallas‘ Tashawn Bower recorded 1.5 sacks.

Despite a stronger second half, Dallas struggled with penalties that hampered their chances. The Defenders held on for the win, showcasing their dominance as they prepare to host the Louisville Kings next Saturday. Meanwhile, Dallas will hit the road to face the Birmingham Stallions.
