Dresden Monarchs blank Hildesheim Invaders 31-0 to clinch GFL North title

The Dresden Monarchs (11-0) wrapped up the German Football League North title in emphatic fashion Sunday, shutting out the Hildesheim Invaders (6-3) 31-0 in front of 5,610 spectators at Heinz Steyer Stadium and securing home-field advantage for the playoffs.

Defense sets the tone

Points were hard to come by early as both defenses controlled the opening exchanges. Dresden finally broke through when quarterback Casey Thompson, again starting in place of Rocky Lombardi, connected with running back Tofunmi Lala for the opening touchdown.

The Invaders had an early opportunity when Holden Hughes picked off an errant Thompson pass, but the Hildesheim offense was unable to take advantage.

That became the story of the afternoon.

Hildesheim managed only one first down during the first half and struggled to establish its passing game against a Dresden defense that gave Nelson Hughes little room to operate.

Monarchs pull away

The Monarchs began finding more openings in the second quarter. Thompson connected with Montigo Moss for a touchdown before David Moore III added another score, with Florian Finke converting both extra points to send Dresden into halftime leading 21-0.

The defense continued to provide the offense with favorable field position, and the Monarchs steadily turned those opportunities into points.

Secondary shuts down Hildesheim

Any hopes of a second-half Hildesheim comeback disappeared quickly.

Thompson found Moss again for his second touchdown of the afternoon before Finke drilled a 50-yard field goal to extend the lead to 31-0.

Meanwhile, the Dresden secondary kept taking the ball away. Lukas Masero, Jason Denneboom and Vance Feuerbacher each intercepted Hughes as the Invaders failed to reach the end zone.

Hildesheim did find some running room later through Matti Probst, Hughes and Jeremie Beni, but none of those drives produced points.

North belongs to Dresden

The victory gave the Monarchs their second shutout in three games and kept their perfect season intact at 11-0. More importantly, Dresden has now clinched first place in the GFL North and home-field advantage in the postseason.

Despite the defeat, the Invaders are also locked into their playoff position. With the Berlin Rebels losing to Düsseldorf Panther, Hildesheim is assured of finishing third in the North.

The Monarchs have one regular-season home game remaining, against the Ravensburg Razorbacks, before turning their attention to the playoffs and their pursuit of a place in the GFL Bowl.
