Dresden Monarchs stay perfect with 36-7 win over Berlin Rebels

The Berlin Rebels (2-6) could not slow down the unbeaten Dresden Monarchs (10-0) Saturday, as the GFL North leaders rolled to a 36-7 road victory at Mommsenstadion and kept their perfect season intact.

With Rocky Lombardi resting a bruised shoulder, newly-signed Casey Thompson made the start for Dresden and handled the assignment well. Thompson completed 17 of 26 passes for 194 yards and three touchdowns while also adding 24 rushing yards and a score.

Thompson settles in quickly

The Monarchs struck first when Thompson kept the ball on a seven-yard touchdown run midway through the opening quarter.

He then opened up the passing game in the second. Thompson found Montigo Moss for a 27-yard touchdown and later connected with fellow newcomer Michael Breuler from nine yards out. Florian Finke added a 30-yard field goal just before halftime, sending Dresden into the break with a 23-0 lead.

Moss finished with six catches for 83 yards and a touchdown, while Breuler caught three passes for 32 yards and two scores.

Special teams adds another blow

Any realistic hope of a Berlin comeback disappeared immediately after halftime.

Tofunmi Lala fielded the opening kickoff at the Dresden 2-yard line and took it 98 yards for a touchdown. The extra point was blocked, but the Monarchs had stretched the lead to 29-0 only 17 seconds into the half.

Thompson added his third touchdown pass later in the quarter, finding Breuler from two yards out to make it 36-0.

Dresden defense shuts down Rebels

The Monarchs defense never allowed the Rebels offense to get comfortable.

Tyquell Fields completed 14 of 22 passes for just 106 yards and an interception while finishing with minus-13 rushing yards on 11 attempts. Berlin managed only 17 rushing yards from Nazar Bombata and three from Jessey Darby.

The Rebels’ only points came from their defense. Former Dresden player Jonas Gacek intercepted Marvin Schöne in the fourth quarter and returned it 69 yards for a touchdown.

That did little to change the outcome.

The victory pushed Dresden to 10-0 and continued its march toward the top seed in the GFL North playoffs. Thompson’s successful debut also gave the Monarchs another option at quarterback as they move deeper into the season.

Next up for Dresden is a home matchup with the Hildesheim Invaders, who have already secured their own playoff berth. Meanwhile, the Rebels still have a mathematical chance to snag the final playoff berth in the GFL North as they get set to face the Düsseldorf Panther.
