Germany: Düsseldorf Panther use explosive third quarter to beat Kiel Baltic Hurricanes

The Düsseldorf Panther (3-4) broke open a defensive battle with a pair of game-changing plays in the third quarter before holding off the Kiel Baltic Hurricanes (1-6) for a 31-22 victory in German Football League action, tightening the race for the final playoff berth in the GFL North.

Defenses set the early tone

Neither offense found much room to operate during the opening half as both defenses controlled the line of scrimmage.

The Panther relied on the running game to move the chains, while Kiel struggled to turn promising drives into points. The breakthrough finally came midway through the second quarter when Gennadiy Adams capped a 72-yard drive with an 11-yard touchdown run. David Immel added the extra point, giving Düsseldorf a 7-0 halftime advantage.

Big plays swing the game

The momentum shifted back and forth immediately after halftime.

Quarterback PJ Settles pulled the Hurricanes even with an 18-yard touchdown run, but the response from Düsseldorf could not have been more emphatic. Daniel Pedro fielded the ensuing kickoff in his own end zone and raced 100 yards for a touchdown to restore the lead.

The Panther struck again only moments later when Adams burst through the middle of the defense for an 83-yard touchdown run, stretching the lead to 21-7.

Kiel answered with a one-yard scoring run by Lorenz Rotermund to stay within striking distance, but Immel’s 23-yard field goal restored a 10-point cushion heading into the fourth quarter.

Panthers finish the job

The home side continued to dictate the pace in the final quarter. Quarterback Dawson Herl finished an impressive drive with a 13-yard touchdown pass to James Okike, pushing the lead to 31-14.

The Hurricanes mounted one last rally as Settles connected with Jarvis McClam for a 40-yard touchdown before adding the two-point conversion himself to trim the margin to nine points. However, Düsseldorf recovered from a pair of late changes of possession and ran out the clock to secure the victory.

The win moves the Panther to 3-4 as they prepare for a difficult road trip to face the unbeaten Dresden Monarchs (8-0) on August 1. The Hurricanes, now 1-6, return home next weekend looking to bounce back against the Berlin Rebels (2-4).
