European League of Football: Stuttgart Surge sign former GFL All-Star – CB Malcolm Washington

The Stuttgart Surge of the European League of Football have signed their third American import coming to terms with former division one talent Malcolm Washington. The rangy defensive back looks to be an impact defender in Stuttgart’s secondary.

The 6’2″, 190-pound, 27-year-old from Houston, Texas, led the German Football League in interceptions with 10 and passes defended with 20 as a member of the 2019 Allgäu Comets. Washington also recorded 32 tackles, while being used as a cornerback, kick returner and receiver. He scored three touchdowns, two on interceptions and one on a kick return, finishing the season with 989 all-purpose yards.

Following the 2019 season, the GFL standout was quickly signed by the Edmonton Elks of the Canadian Football League. However, the ensuing season was cancelled due to the pandemic.

Before venturing abroad, he attended the University of Northern Iowa (NCAA Div. I, FCS) from 2016 to 2017 and appeared in 21 games. He recorded 91 total tackles, six interceptions and seven pass breakups. Prior to transferring to Northern Iowa, Washington was an impact defender at Fresno State (NCAA Div. 1, FBS) making 45 total tackles.  Washington was invited to training camp by the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals but was released before the season started.

Washington is now the third American player signed to Stuttgart as the Surge have already signed quarterback Randall Schroeder and tight end David Meza. The newest member of the Surge joins a defense that adds linebackers  Precious Ogbevoen and Nicolas Knoblauch. Expect Stuttgart to add another player to their secondary before the season begins.
