Finnish Maple League: Butchers, Steelers clash with regular-season title on the line

The Porvoon Butchers (6-2) host the Kuopio Steelers (7-2) Friday in a heavyweight Maple League matchup with the regular-season title hanging in the balance.

A Porvoon victory would move the Butchers past Kuopio and secure first place, while the Steelers can lock up the top spot by avenging their dramatic 43-42 loss to Porvoon earlier this season.

Butchers looking for another comeback win

The first meeting showed just how little separates these teams. The Steelers built a two-touchdown advantage before the Butchers came roaring back to steal a one-point victory.

Porvoon enters the rematch with its offense gaining momentum. Donovan Isom is coming off a five-touchdown performance in last week’s 49-27 win over the Wasa Royals, while running back Christian Powell has powered his way to a league-leading 1,029 yards and 11 touchdowns.

The Butchers are also getting some late-season help. Offensive lineman Sauli Puustinen returns after spending the beginning of the season with the Raiders Tirol in the European Football Alliance, while German Simon Otto is also back with the team.

Defensively, Jesse Vuoksenturja remains out, but Dal’Mont Gourdine continues to cause problems up front. Gourdine enters Friday only one sack away from the Maple League single-season record.

Jarman closing in on milestone

Kuopio arrives with the league’s leading passer and one of its most dangerous running backs.

Slade Jarman has thrown for 1,967 yards and 20 touchdowns, putting him just 33 yards away from the 2,000-yard mark. With Daniel Rubinstein potentially finished for the season, Isaak Marshall has become an increasingly important target in the Steelers passing attack.

The Steelers will also have Iiro Pekkarinen back in the lineup after he missed one game, adding another versatile piece for a team preparing for one of its biggest games of the season.

Powell and Mack headline ground battle

Friday also puts the Maple League’s top two rushers on the same field.

Powell leads the league with 1,029 yards and 11 touchdowns, while Joshua Mack has piled up 753 yards and a league-best 12 rushing scores for Kuopio.

Both backs can take over a game, and their ability to keep the chains moving could become especially important if Friday develops into another close finish.

There is little separating the Butchers and Steelers, and this time there is even more at stake. One game will determine who finishes the night on top of the Maple League — and could decide who enters the playoffs with home-field advantage.
