Free college football gets serious in November

An unbeaten rivalry showdown, a junior college championship and three more reasons to leave the subscription button alone this Saturday.

November is when college football starts collecting on all those promises made in August. Conference titles are within reach, playoff places need protecting and an unbeaten record suddenly feels rather fragile. You do not need a television contract worth billions to appreciate any of that.

This week’s free viewing menu takes us from a meeting of unbeaten rivals in Michigan to a championship game in Texas. There is one game each from JUCO, NAIA, Division III, Division II and FCS. Football for football’s sake, with enough at stake to keep the remote control on the table. And if your club needs an import quarterback, consider the evening research.

All games are on Saturday, November 7. Kickoff times are Amsterdam time, CET. The American clocks have now changed too, so noon Eastern is once again 18:00 here.

Hope at Calvin

NCAA Division III | 19:00 CET | Grand Rapids, Michigan

Two unbeaten teams, one established rivalry and the MIAA championship race. Hope arrives 8–0 and ranked eighth in the AFCA poll; Calvin is also 8–0 and ranked 20th. Both are 5–0 in conference play. Hope beat Kalamazoo 48–13 last week, while Calvin put away Trine 51–20. Neither has been limping toward this meeting.

Why watch: The rivalry is only reaching its third football meeting, yet already has a game worthy of the wider Hope–Calvin sporting relationship. While there are no Dutch citizens on either squad, the last names on the rosters will look like about half the players just stepped off the Holland-America Line.

Navarro at Trinity Valley

JUCO | SWJCFC Championship | 20:00 CET | Athens, Texas

Navarro earned its trip to the conference final by squeezing past Tyler 28–25. Now the Bulldogs head to Trinity Valley with a championship on the line. The semifinal was a useful reminder that junior college football can deliver the sort of fourth quarter that makes an evening disappear very quickly.

Why watch: This is a title game, not a rehearsal for one. The urgency is built in, and Navarro has just demonstrated that it can survive a tight finish. A good place to watch players making the most of their next opportunity.

Bloomsburg at Kutztown

NCAA Division II | 18:00 CET | Kutztown, Pennsylvania

Kutztown is 8–1 after East Stroudsburg handed it a 32–25 overtime defeat. The visitors are hardly arriving to offer sympathy: Bloomsburg is 7–2, has won three straight and just beat West Chester 22–15 in overtime. Kutztown receiver Noah Kracyla caught 12 passes for 209 yards and three touchdowns last week. That gives the Huskies something very specific to worry about.

Why watch: A strong home team trying to recover from its first defeat meets an opponent arriving with momentum. Both spent last Saturday working overtime. We would happily accept another close finish.

Watch free: Golden Bear Sports Network. Choose Bloomsburg–Kutztown; PSAC conference broadcasts are free.

Saint Francis at Indiana Wesleyan

NAIA | 18:00 CET | Marion, Indiana

Saint Francis of Indiana takes a 7–2 record to 8–1 Indiana Wesleyan. Wildcats quarterback Arjun Lothe threw for 383 yards and four touchdowns in last week’s 38–29 win over Taylor. Saint Francis beat Defiance 45–14 and will want to keep Lothe occupied with watching his own defense rather than dissecting theirs.

Why watch: Two winning teams and a productive quarterback make this a worthwhile early option. Saint Francis needs possessions that eat clock as well as produce points; giving Wesleyan repeated opportunities would be asking for trouble.

Watch free: Urban Edge Network. Select “University of Saint Francis at Indiana Wesleyan University.” IWU’s broadcasts are free on UEN.

Robert Morris at Duquesne

FCS | 18:00 CET | Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Our FCS stop stays local, with Robert Morris making the short trip to Duquesne. The Dukes are 4–4 after three straight wins, while the Colonials are 4–5 and need to recover from a 49–14 loss to Central Connecticut. Duquesne quarterback Carson Camp accounted for six touchdowns against New Haven last week.

Why watch: A Pittsburgh rivalry adds some bite, although recent form clearly favors Duquesne. Robert Morris needs a much better offensive showing to make this competitive. Consider it the alternative screen while the two stronger early matchups develop.

Watch free: NEC Front Row game broadcast. Free official coverage; the game is also carried on RYZ Sports Network.

My route through the evening: start with Bloomsburg–Kutztown, bring up Hope–Calvin at 19:00 and have the Texas championship ready at 20:00. Five games, no subscription shopping. Leave that particular contact sport for another day.
