German Bowl XLIII: Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns defense getting ready to face toughest test

In German Bowl XLIII, the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns stellar defense will face its toughest test yet in a contest against the Potsdam Royal’s high-powered, #1 ranked offense.

The Unicorns defense has looked very tough in the GFL playoffs as they have only given up 29 points in the quarterfinal and semifinal games. This includes only surrendering eight points to the Allgäu Comets in their semifinal matchup.

It’s safe to say that Schwäbisch Hall’s defense is coming in hot to the German Bowl, but same can be said on the other side for the Potsdam Royals and their offense. The Royals managed to put up 115 points in the GFL playoffs including a 66-point game in the quarterfinals against the Straubing Spiders.

To find out what makes the Unicorns defense so good, you must first look at their front seven. When it comes to stopping the run, this group of d-lineman and linebackers has the formula. Schwäbisch Hall has only given up 2.7 yards per carry on the ground and 11 rushing touchdowns, the second fewest in the league.

Schwäbisch Hall’s secondary is nothing you can push around either as they are second in passing yards given up per game with 171.5 and have the fewest passing touchdowns thrown on them with only 13.

Stopping the run on early downs is key for the Unicorns to have success against the Royals explosive offense. Both teams have a perfect season on the line heading into the final game of the season.

As they say, “Offense wins games, but Defense wins championships.” That theory will be tested to the full on Saturday October 8th in Frankfurt at Deutsche Bank Park.
