German Football League start postponed

The coronavirus, COVID-19, has put a stop to all football and sports around the world for now, and Europe’s largest American football league, the German Football League, GFL, is no exception.

The German Football League Directorate has amended an earlier postponement of the league start and has now announced that both the GFL and GFL2 (second division) will commence at least five weeks later than originally scheduled.

The GFL was set to kick off April 25 while GFL2 was set to commence May 2.

With the government shutdown of all sports and practice/training facilities and all sporting events until at least April 20, regular training and practice are not possible of course.  Border closures, quarantines, and air traffic restrictions are preventing import players from reaching their teams.

The GFL had originally scheduled a break to accommodate the European Football Championship but that will not happen now with a new schedule being prepared.

The GFL also states that additional measures are still being discussed.

In the past 24 hours, another 3,000 people were diagnosed as being infected with the coronavirus in Germany raising the total to over 12,000, a 25% jump.
