Germany: Dresden Monarchs overcome early deficit, rout Berlin Rebels in record-setting showcase
The Dresden Monarchs (3-0) extended their unbeaten start to the season with a commanding 49-21 victory over the Berlin Rebels (1-2) at Rudolf Harbig Stadium, rallying from an early deficit in front of a record crowd of 13,146 fans undeterred by torrential rain.
Record crowd braves rain, Rebels strike first
Berlin stunned the home crowd immediately, capitalizing on a strong opening kick return to march 45 yards in five plays. Running back Naz Bombata punched in a 3-yard touchdown (7-0) off quarterback Connor Kaegi’s sharp play-action execution. The Rebels’ lead lasted just 90 seconds, however, as Dresden quarterback Justin Miller answered with a 22-yard strike to receiver Tylor Hudson, leveling the score at 7-7.

Miller-Hudson connection fuels Monarchs’ rebuttal
Miller and Hudson torched Berlin’s secondary all afternoon, connecting for four touchdowns. The duo’s second score—a 14-yard slant—capped a 10-play drive for a 14-7 lead. Running back Tofunmi Lala widened the gap to 20-7 late in the first quarter after Berlin fumbled deep in their own territory. Though Kaegi countered with a 12-yard rushing TD (20-14), Miller found Hudson twice more before halftime (27-14, 34-21), exploiting blown coverages and a flurry of Rebels penalties.
Penalties, defensive adjustments define second-half dominance
Dresden’s defense emerged from halftime transformed, stifling Kaegi with relentless pressure and holding Berlin scoreless over the final 30 minutes. Linebackers swarmed Bombata (2.8 yards per carry), while the secondary blanketed receivers, forcing three three-and-outs. Miller’s fifth TD pass—a 9-yard dart to Hudson—and Lala’s 15-yard scoring run (40-21) sealed the game by the fourth quarter. The exclamation point came via a safety when Berlin’s backup QB was sacked in the end zone with 0:34 remaining.
