Germany’s Assindia Cardinals sign Div. 1 QB Joe Newman

The Assindia Cardinals, who have moved up into Germany’s GFL2, have signed Wofford College (NCAA Div. 1) quarterback Joe Newman for the 2021 season.

The 5’10”, 185 pound 23-year-old Newman, from Riverdale, Georgia, led the Wofford College Terriers (Southern Conference) to a 17-8 overall record (13-3 conference) in his two years as starting quarterback. The team reached the playoffs both 2018 and 2019.  For his career (2016-2019), he played in 41 games with 25 starts at quarterback. Newman led the Terriers to three SoCon titles and four NCAA playoff appearances. He was 168-of-299 passing for 2,414 yards and 15 touchdowns while carrying the ball 327 times for 1,837 yards and 22 touchdowns. He had 4,251 yards of total offense in his career.

Newman was named Southern Conference Offensive Player of the Year by the coaches and media and was the first Wofford quarterback to earn All-Southern Conference first team honors by the coaches and media. He was also named HERO Sports second team All-American.
