Sweden: Göteborg Giants triumph over Limhamn Griffins in home debut
The Göteborg Giants (3-1) defeated the Limhamn Griffins (1-2) 34-13 in their Swedish Superserien home opener this past weekend. The Giants showcased their strength and determination, marking a successful return to Vallhalla, their historic home field.
Giants start strong
The atmosphere was electric as the Giants kicked off their first home game since 2002. They wasted no time making an impact, with running back Filip Roth breaking free for a stunning 79-yard touchdown on just the second play of the game. After a missed extra point, Göteborg led 6-0. Quarterback Luke Lovell then connected with receiver Axel Hagelberg Strid for a touchdown, extending the lead to 13-0.
Defensive highlights
The Giants’ defense stepped up when it mattered most. After Limhamn began to find their rhythm, defensive end Natanael Linné Attie came up with a crucial sack, forcing a fumble that he recovered himself. This momentum shift allowed Göteborg to score again, with Roth rushing in for his second touchdown, making it 20-0. Limhamn managed to respond with a touchdown from Dominik Kapàs, but the Giants quickly answered back with another score from Hagelberg Strid, ending the half at 27-6.
Second half struggles and late surge
The second half saw the Giants struggle offensively, while Limhamn fought hard to close the gap. Griffin’s quarterback Axel Holm scored on a sneak, bringing the score to 27-13. However, Göteborg regained control with an impressive 91-yard drive capped by a touchdown pass to tight end Viking Hasselblad, sealing the victory at 34-13.
Head coach Ron Carpenter praised his team’s performance, noting areas for improvement but emphasizing the importance of the win. The Giants now look forward to their next matchup against the Örebro Black Knights on May 2, aiming to build on their momentum.
