Graz Giants erupt in second half to rout Vienna Knights in key AFL showdown
The Graz Giants improved to 6-3 with a dominant 58-15 victory over the Vienna Knights, who also now sit at 6-3, Saturday at ASKÖ Stadium Eggenberg in a crucial Austrian Football League matchup with major playoff implications.
After entering the game at 5-3 against a Vienna team that arrived with a 6-2 record, the Giants used a huge second half to climb into third place in the standings while dropping the Knights to fourth.
Storm delay sets the stage
A heavy thunderstorm over Graz delayed kickoff by an hour, but once the game got underway the action came quickly.
The Giants seized the early momentum when Edwin Morales III intercepted a pass to give the hosts possession. Quarterback Bastian Steinmair capitalized moments later, finding Max Haidvogl for the opening touchdown.
The Knights answered immediately as Chad Jeffries connected with Florian Huber for a touchdown to level the score at 7-7. Before the end of the quarter, however, Steinmair found Edwin Morales III for another score as Graz regained a 14-7 advantage.
Knights briefly grab the lead
The visitors enjoyed their best stretch of the afternoon in the second quarter.
Jeffries and Huber hooked up for a second touchdown, and after a penalty against Graz, Mathias Lechner converted the two-point attempt to put the Vienna Knights ahead 15-14.
That lead proved short-lived.
Steinmair responded with a touchdown pass to Jakob Schneeberger, and Leo Liptak later added a field goal as the Giants took a 23-15 lead into halftime.
Steinmair takes over
The second half belonged entirely to the home team.
Steinmair delivered one of his finest performances of the season, repeatedly finding open receivers as the Giants offense hit another gear. Jakob Begander became his favorite target, hauling in two touchdown receptions in the third quarter as Graz steadily pulled away.
At the same time, the Giants defense completely shut down the Knights, who were unable to add another point after halftime.
Giants finish with a flourish
The rout continued in the fourth quarter.
Begander completed his hat trick with a third touchdown reception before the defense delivered the finishing blows. Timo Sommer came up with an interception, while Valentin Bader forced a fumble to extinguish any hopes of a comeback.
Steinmair later connected with Fabian Pliessnig for another touchdown, and Dean Opara capped the scoring with a touchdown run.
For the Graz Giants, it was a statement victory at exactly the right time. They not only avenged their earlier loss in Vienna, but also strengthened their position heading toward the postseason with one of their most impressive performances of the year.
