Hildesheim Invaders edge Kiel Baltic Hurricanes in late GFL thriller

The Hildesheim Invaders (5-0) survived their toughest test of the season, holding off the Kiel Baltic Hurricanes (1-3) 23-20 in a tense German Football League showdown at Helios Homefield in Hildesheim.

In front of 983 spectators at the SALUTE TO SERVICE GAMEDAY, the league leaders were pushed to the brink before rallying in the second half to remain unbeaten.

Hurricanes strike first

The visitors wasted little time making their presence felt.

After running back Lorenz Rotermund helped move the chains, PJ Settles connected with Till Nowaczyk on a 43-yard touchdown pass to give Kiel a quick 7-0 lead.

The Invaders answered almost immediately. Nelson Hughes orchestrated an efficient drive before finding Lennart Stukenborg on a four-yard touchdown pass. Paul Krause added the extra point to tie the game at 7-7.

Kiel controls the first half

For much of the opening half, the Baltic Hurricanes looked like the sharper team.

Anousheh Fulford drilled a 23-yard field goal early in the second quarter before Settles struck again, this time finding Klaas Sengstacke for a 26-yard touchdown. Suddenly, Kiel held a 17-7 advantage.

The visitors were also making life difficult for Hughes. CJ Davis, Joshua Köhnlein, Rob Revels and Thiago Lessow helped keep pressure on the Hildesheim offense and forced several difficult possessions.

But just when it looked like Kiel would take full control, Hughes delivered a huge response. Starting deep in their own territory, the Invaders marched down the field, and Hughes connected with Philipp Dolezal on a 19-yard touchdown pass shortly before halftime to cut the deficit to 17-14.

Terjung sparks the comeback

The third quarter remained a battle.

Fulford extended the Kiel lead to 20-14 with a 44-yard field goal, but the momentum slowly began shifting toward the home squad as the Invaders defense tightened up.

Kyle Kitchens, Julien Thompson and the rest of the defensive unit began forcing tougher situations for Settles and the Hurricanes offense.

Then came the game’s biggest offensive play.

With just six seconds remaining in the third quarter, Hughes spotted Paul Terjung behind the secondary and connected on a spectacular 48-yard touchdown strike. Krause’s extra point gave Hildesheim its first lead of the afternoon at 21-20.

Defense seals the win

The fourth quarter turned into a defensive slugfest.

Neither offense could generate much momentum as both defensive fronts controlled the line of scrimmage.

The decisive moment arrived when a mishandled snap by the Baltic Hurricanes resulted in a safety, extending the Invaders’ lead to 23-20.

That proved to be enough.

Kiel still had opportunities late, but the Hildesheim defense stood firm and prevented the visitors from finding the end zone. After securing one final first down, the Invaders were able to run out the clock and preserve their unbeaten record.

The victory keeps Hildesheim atop the GFL standings at 5-0, while the Kiel Baltic Hurricanes were left wondering what might have been after coming within a few plays of handing the league leaders their first defeat.
