Holland: Groningen Giants capitalize on turnovers to top Arnhem Falcons
The Groningen Giants (1-1) picked up their first win of the Dutch Eredivisie season in convincing fashion, forcing seven turnovers on their way to a 22–6 road victory over the struggling Arnhem Falcons (0-3).
A sloppy start in Arnhem
The Falcons never found their rhythm, much to the disappointment of the home crowd. Quarterback struggles defined the day, with Arnhem throwing three interceptions and losing four fumbles. Despite moving the ball at times, the offense repeatedly stalled in Groningen territory, settling for just two field goals all afternoon.
Giants strike early
Groningen didn’t waste time taking advantage. Receiver Keyon Jacobs opened the scoring with an impressive juggling catch in the end zone, giving the Giants an early lead they would never relinquish. Though they left some opportunities on the field, the visitors consistently made Arnhem pay for mistakes.
Highlight-reel moments
Just before halftime, receiver Jony Ahmedov delivered the play of the game, turning a short pass into a long touchdown by breaking two tackles on a 31-yard dash after the catch. That score put Groningen up 20–3 at the break. Running back Tim de Haan also added a short rushing touchdown in the first half, capitalizing on yet another Arnhem turnover.
Late safety seals it
The Falcons showed brief life with a fourth-quarter field goal, but any hope of a comeback was snuffed out when Groningen recorded a safety late in the game, bringing the final score to 22–6. A potential fumble return touchdown by Arnhem was called back after the play had been whistled dead, summing up a frustrating day for the home side.
What’s next
The win brings Groningen to .500 as they prepare to host the Utrecht Dominators (1-1) next weekend. For Arnhem, now 0-3, the season is quickly slipping away. They’ll need to clean up the turnovers and find consistency fast if they hope to compete in the Eredivisie.
