Japan: X-League Premier launches with new year-round format and expanded playoffs

Japan’s top American football league is shaking things up in 2026 with the introduction of the X-League Premier, a new elite conference featuring a streamlined 11-team structure and a extended, year-round regular season designed to increase visibility and competitive intensity.

A season like no other
The new format stretches across seven months with a total of 11 regular-season rounds, each featuring five games while one team rests on a bi-week. The season opens on May 3 at the Tokyo Dome with a doubleheader, highlighted by a Rice Bowl rematch between the Obic Seagulls and Panasonic Impulse. After the fourth round in early July, the league takes a two-month summer break before returning in September for the second half.

Path to the Rice Bowl
All 11 teams will play a round-robin schedule, with the top six finishers advancing to a new playoff structure. Those playoffs will determine which team earns a spot in the American Football Japan Championship Rice Bowl, adding greater stakes to the regular season and rewarding consistency across the extended format. The regular season concludes on November 15, setting the stage for a high-stakes postseason.
