Houston Gamblers secure first win in UFL showdown against Columbus Aviators
In a crucial matchup, the Houston Gamblers (1-4) secured their first win of the United Football League season by defeating the Columbus Aviators (2-3) 17-13. Houston’s defense stepped up in the second half, shutting out Columbus and sealing the victory in a game that felt like a must-win for both teams.
Strong start for the Gamblers
Houston opened the game with a bang, as quarterback Nolan Henderson led a methodical 13-play, 80-yard drive that consumed over seven minutes. A crucial 12-yard fourth-down catch by Justin Hall kept the drive alive, and Jalen White capped it off with a touchdown, giving the Gamblers an early lead. They continued to roll, forcing a three-and-out and then orchestrating another impressive drive, culminating in Henderson’s own read-option keeper for a two-score advantage.
Aviators find their rhythm
Columbus needed a spark, and they found it when Jalan McClendon connected with Antwane Wells Jr. for a 27-yard gain. McClendon then followed up with a 20-yard pass to Alize Mack, setting up his own one-yard rushing touchdown to put the Aviators on the board. After a missed field goal by Houston, Columbus capitalized on a drive led by Toa Taua, who finished with a seven-yard touchdown, pulling the Aviators within one point at halftime.
Defense takes over
The second half saw both defenses tighten up, with neither team scoring in the third quarter. Houston finally broke the deadlock early in the fourth with a short field goal from John Hoyland, extending their lead to 17-13. Columbus had opportunities to respond but faltered in the red zone, with Eugene Asante forcing a fumble that Houston recovered, sealing the game.
Houston’s defense was relentless, finishing with three sacks and holding Columbus under 250 total yards. The Gamblers will look to build on this momentum as they prepare for their next matchup against the Aviators, this time in Ohio.
