Hungarian Football League regular season heading towards home stretch

The Hungarian Football League continues with round six as teams fight for home field advantage in the playoffs.

On Saturday,  two games take place in Fót. While the Budapest Cowbells face the Győr Sharks, the TD Store Eagles host the Budapest Wolves. One day later, the Fehérvár Enthroners visit the Miskolc Steelers, while the Nyíregyháza Tigers host the DAK Acél Gorillaz.

The Cowbells crushed the DAK Acél Gorillaz last time. Although the running game did not work too well, quarterback Márton Czirók was able to connect with his receivers throughout the game. Interesting to note is that Troy Baker is preparing for a very important game, since he started the season as the head coach of the Sharks and now he is part of the Cowbells’ coaching staff.

The team of Győr showed some signs of improvement last time against the Fehérvár Enthroners. They had only one turnover, the offense made progress on the field, and the defense continued to shine. Especially, Damante Horton who had four interceptions during the game. This defense could cause problems for Czirók and the receivers.

Although the Eagles lost last time against the Steelers, the defense showed a good performance. They could put pressure on Vasyl Yordan and the O-line, force fumbles and even get the loose balls. Nevertheless, the race for the playoffs is finished for the Eagles. Now they have to focus on keeping the fifth place which is a good position for a newcomer team in the Hungarian Football League.

The Budapest Wolves retook its place on top of the HFL table after defeating the Tigers in Nyíregyháza. The six time champions still have to make some adjustments on offense, since quarterback Márk Bencsics threw three interceptions in one half. However, Ábel Benke could be a brand new alternative for head coach István Kovács. The rookie running back could always find the holes in the Tigers’ D-line to keep the offense moving.

Andre Whyte saved the Steelers last time. He scored three touchdowns for last year’s runner-up. Nevertheless, there were too many mistakes on offense. On the other hand, the defense turned things around in the second half which could be decisive against the Enthroners on Sunday.

The Fehérvár Enthroners might give some hard times for the Steelers’ running game, since the D-line is considered among the best ones in the HFL. Nevertheless, quarterback Márk Erős still has some issues connecting with the receivers. That is a problem to fix, or the young QB needs more experience. The strong running game can be problematic because the Steelers’ defensive line is also hard to crack.

Not too much work, but some adjustments are still needed in the Tigers’ offense. However, running back Márk Benő showed off his talent. Thus, head coach Thomas Smythe now has more options in every position, if the youngsters keep up this pace. Not to mention, the Tigers are in front of a very difficult three weeks facing the Gorillaz, the Steelers and the Cowbells. They will need some extra players, who could help not to get too exhausted heading towards the playoffs.

The Gorillaz are out of the race for the playoffs, but have not not given up. Nonetheless, the odds are not in favor of them before the Tigers game. A lot of key players are injured and the offense has not scored a touchdown for seven quarters. This has to change in this game if they do not want to be crushed like the Eagles a month ago.
