IFAF European Championship: Team Spain’s 2023 roster set

The Spanish national team travels to Jerusalem this Sunday, August 6 to face Team Israel at the Kraft Family Sports Campus in a Group B battle as the International Federation of American Football European Championship tournament continues.

Team Spain defeated Ireland in 2022 26-7 in its opening game of the tournament.

The last time Spain and Israel met was in 2015 when the visiting Israelis come out on top 28-20. The winner of this game will advance to face Germany in a qualifier for Group A in October.

Team Spain head coach Fernando Guijarro has summoned 37 players for this game from 14 teams in both the Spanish leagues and from Europe: LG OLED Black Demons Las Rozas, Osos Rivas, Gijón Mariners, Valencia Firebats, Badalona Dracs, Alcobendas Cavaliers, Mallorca Voltors, Camioneros de Coslada, Barcelona Búfals, Tenerife United and Fuengirola Potros. German Football League’s Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns, European League of Football’s Leipzig Kings and Barcelona Dragons.

At quarterback for Spain will be Sergio Barbero who led the Osos Rivas to the Spanish title game, and Alcobendas Cavaliers’ signal caller David Yu. Barbero will have one of his favorite targets to throw to, Osos veteran wide receiver David Giron. Spain’s run game could cause problems for Israel as it is led by Cristian Santos who is the second leading rusher for the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns in the German Football League.

Coach Guijarro is feeling confident:

“We are working with a very broad and solid base, which goes beyond those who were finally selected. We started with an outstanding core of 90 players, and so we enter this game with a high level of enthusiasm.”

The game will be shown live, Sunday, August 6 at 18:30 CET.
