Japan: Fujitsu Frontiers look to keep pace at top against winless OrientalBio Silver Star

The Fujitsu Frontiers (5-1) look to keep the pressure on the leaders Wednesday when they face the OrientalBio Silver Star (0-5) at Uvance Todoroki Stadium by Fujitsu in Kawasaki in an X League Premier matchup.

Fujitsu escaped its last outing with a 20-17 comeback win over the SEKISUI Challengers, while OrientalBio is still searching for its first victory after falling 27-17 to the Tokyo Gas Creators.

Fujitsu survives a scare

The Frontiers had to dig themselves out of a 17-10 second-half hole against SEKISUI.

Koki Miyake gave the offense the spark it needed, breaking loose for 42 yards to the Challengers four early in the fourth quarter. A penalty backed Fujitsu up, but Tsubasa Takagi responded by firing a 13-yard touchdown pass to Daniel Barker for the go-ahead score.

Miyake finished with 62 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries, while Masanari Kagawa added 81 yards on 11 attempts. Takagi completed 15 of 24 passes for 155 yards and a touchdown.

That ground production matters. Fujitsu already owns the league’s top passing attack at 225.2 yards per game, and the running game has now topped 100 yards twice this season.

Silver Star can strike quickly

The record hasn’t been kind to OrientalBio, but Conor Regan and Kasey Hawthorne give the Silver Star a big-play threat through the air.

Against Nojima Sagamihara, Regan completed 19 of 28 passes for 270 yards. Hawthorne hauled in seven passes for 146 yards, including a 77-yard connection that set up their five-yard touchdown on the next play.

The pair struck again against Tokyo Gas, connecting on an 86-yard touchdown.

The bigger problem has been finding balance. OrientalBio enters Wednesday allowing 142.5 rushing yards per game, giving the improving Fujitsu ground attack another avenue to attack.

Frontiers looking for complete performance

Fujitsu averages a league-best 25.3 points per game, but last week’s escape against winless SEKISUI showed that nothing comes automatically.

The Frontiers need to establish Miyake and Kagawa on the ground, let Takagi work off that success and avoid giving Regan and Hawthorne opportunities to flip the game with one deep strike.

For OrientalBio, the assignment is straightforward but difficult: slow the run, make Fujitsu work for its points and give its passing game a chance to make something happen.

The Frontiers are chasing the top of the standings. The Silver Star are chasing win No. 1. Wednesday afternoon in Kawasaki, those two pursuits collide.
