Stuttgart Surge title-winning HC Jordan Neuman departs as team declares bankruptcy

The Stuttgart Surge, fresh off a 2025 ELF championship victory, are now facing an off-field collapse as Head Coach Jordan Neuman exits following the franchise’s declaration of insolvency.

An end of an era

In an emotional official statement released on Monday, the Surge announced the departure of Neuman, who had been at the helm since 2023. Under his leadership, the team underwent a dramatic turnaround—from a winless 2022 season to becoming one of Europe’s most formidable football programs. Neuman led Stuttgart to a runner-up finish in 2023 and capped his tenure with a championship in September 2025.

The coach’s influence extended far beyond the win column. He was credited with building a strong team culture, uniting players, staff, and fans behind a shared identity. As the team’s press release noted, Neuman “shaped the franchise like no other,” establishing a “performance-oriented, professional culture” and leading with an “authentic, determined and motivating manner.”

A painful goodbye

Neuman’s departure comes as American Football Club Stuttgart GmbH, the operating company behind the Surge, filed for insolvency, casting serious doubt on the team’s future. Despite efforts to find a financial solution, the organization could not sustain operations.

In his farewell, Neuman expressed deep emotion about leaving the team and city:

“It is with a heavy heart that I say goodbye to Stuttgart and the Surge… What I will miss most is being part of such a special group of coaches, players and staff.”

He also pushed back against suggestions that the team’s success was built on financial advantage, stating, “I reject the accusation that Stuttgart Surge has bought its success. The opposite was the case.”

What’s next for Neuman?

Though he did not confirm specifics, reports suggest Neuman is returning to the Vienna Vikings, where he served as offensive coordinator from 2011–2013. It is believed he will rejoin the organization in a coaching capacity, possibly as OC once again, with a path to eventually succeed long-time head coach Chris Calaycay.

Neuman declined to offer details but confirmed he will remain in Europe, saying, “I will remain a coach in Europe, but it would be unfair if the news of where I will work in the future came from me.”

An uncertain future for the Surge

With Neuman’s exit and the organization in financial disarray, the Surge’s ability to continue competing in the ELF is in serious jeopardy. His departure symbolizes more than just a coaching change—it marks the likely end of one of European football’s most remarkable turnarounds.

As defensive back Konstantin Katz beautifully put it: “Wherever Coach Neuman works in the future, the grass will be a little greener.”

For now, the Stuttgart faithful are left with memories of a championship season—and the painful reality that the man who built it all won’t be back to defend the title.
