Regensburg Phoenix bury Hurricanes with dominant first quarter in 45-18 win

The Regensburg Phoenix (3-5) seized control with a 24-point first quarter and never looked back, defeating the Saarland Hurricanes (1-8) 45-18 in German Football League action Saturday to build momentum heading into the final stretch of the season.

Fast start sets the tone

After winning the coin toss and deferring to the second half, Regensburg let its defense make the opening statement. The Phoenix forced a quick stop on the Hurricanes’ first possession before the offense immediately found its rhythm.

Nebechi Abana opened the scoring with a powerful touchdown run, and Dominik Laßmann’s extra point gave Regensburg a 7-0 lead. The defense kept the pressure on as Gianfranco Anger forced a fumble with a sack, swinging momentum firmly in the Phoenix’s favor.

Quarterback Cameron Yowell then connected with Jadon Gildersleeve on a 26-yard touchdown pass before Felix Lübbers intercepted a Saarland pass to set up another scoring opportunity. Yowell capitalized again, finding Nicolas Hayes for an 18-yard touchdown. Laßmann added a 30-yard field goal before the end of the opening quarter as Regensburg raced to a commanding 24-0 advantage.

Hurricanes respond before halftime

The Hurricanes finally found some offensive success in the second quarter. They first earned a safety when the Phoenix were penalized in their own end zone before quarterback Gabriel Cunningham connected with Joshua Youngblood for a 38-yard touchdown. A 40-yard field goal trimmed the deficit to 24-11 at halftime and gave Saarland some momentum heading into the break.

Phoenix answer every challenge

Any thoughts of a comeback disappeared after halftime. Following an interception by Mika Stieger, Regensburg marched downfield before Abana powered in for his second rushing touchdown of the afternoon to extend the lead to 31-11.

Youngblood answered with a rushing touchdown for the Hurricanes, but the Phoenix responded immediately. Gary Tyler returned the ensuing kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown, restoring complete control. Yowell later found Malik Small on a 12-yard touchdown pass to cap the scoring at 45-18.

The Phoenix defense closed out the game in impressive fashion, allowing no further points while preserving the comfortable victory.

Defense delivers again

Abana paced the offense with two rushing touchdowns while Yowell threw three touchdown passes to Gildersleeve, Hayes and Small. The defense was equally dominant, forcing four fumbles and intercepting three passes to consistently provide the offense with favorable field position.

Head coach Derrick Wilson praised his team’s preparation and execution, pointing to the fast start and strong second-half response as key factors before shifting the focus to next week’s matchup against the Straubing Spiders.
