The Vienna Vikings (1-0) host Rhein Fire (2-0) on Saturday at Generali Arena in what could be one of the most important early-season games in the American Football League Europe.
These two championship contenders know each other well, and the rivalry has only intensified in recent years. Rhein Fire holds a 2-1 advantage in the all-time series, but Vienna has not forgotten last season’s home loss and now gets another opportunity to defend its home turf in front of what could be a packed crowd.
Familiar faces and unfinished business
There is no shortage of storylines heading into this matchup.
Three members of the Vikings roster—Marloshawn Franklin Jr., Alejandro Fernandez and Nick Wiens—will face their former team for the first time. That adds another layer of emotion to a game that already carries significant weight in the race for playoff positioning.
The rivalry itself has produced memorable battles. Last season the teams split their meetings, with each side winning once. Now they meet again with both teams believing they belong among the elite of AFLE.

Quarterbacks in the spotlight
Much of the attention will focus on the duel between quarterbacks Ben Holmes and Kenji Bahar.
Holmes has started the season in excellent form, throwing for 505 yards and five touchdowns. His connection with receiver Yannick Mayr has been especially dangerous, with Mayr hauling in touchdown receptions of 44 and 54 yards. Noah Touré continues to be one of the league’s most reliable targets, while Darrell Stewart Jr. gives the offense another proven weapon.
On the other side, Bahar leads an unbeaten Rhein Fire squad and faces his toughest challenge of the season so far. The former Monmouth standout has the experience and playmaking ability to keep the Fire offense moving against a strong Vienna defense.
Ground game could be decisive
The Vikings have been just as dangerous on the ground as they have through the air.
Karri Pajarinen and Albert Wiesigstrauch have combined for 324 rushing yards through two games. Wiesigstrauch leads the duo with 204 yards while Pajarinen has added 120, giving Vienna one of the league’s most productive backfields.
Defensively, both teams are expected to make life difficult for opposing offenses. Limiting mistakes, protecting field position, and winning key third downs could ultimately determine the outcome.
Statement game in June
It may only be Week 3, but this matchup already feels like a measuring-stick game for both organizations.
With talented quarterbacks, explosive playmakers, and championship aspirations on both sidelines, Vienna and Rhein Fire have all the ingredients for one of the most intense and entertaining games of the young AFLE season. The winner won’t claim a title in June, but it will send a powerful message to the rest of the league.
