LIVESTREAM AFLE: Vienna Vikings @ Rhein Fire, July 18, 17:10 CET (5:10 pm, 11:10 am ET)

The Vienna Vikings (7-0) travel to Duisburg to face Rhein Fire (5-1) in one of the biggest games of the American Football League Europe season as the league’s two highest-scoring offenses square off for the second time this year. The Vikings claimed the first meeting 24-10 in Week 3, but Rhein Fire have won four straight since that loss, setting the stage for another showdown between two championship contenders.

Elite offenses collide

Few teams have matched the offensive production of these clubs this season. The Vikings lead the league with 46.4 points and 485.7 total yards per game while averaging 7.61 yards per play. Rhein Fire rank second in scoring at 37.7 points per game and 6.94 yards per play but lead the league in offensive Expected Points Added per play (0.51) and offensive success rate (59.3 percent). With both offenses capable of scoring quickly, fans should expect plenty of fireworks.

Quarterbacks lead the way

Ben Holmes has been outstanding for Vienna, throwing for 1,800 yards, 20 touchdowns and just one interception while posting a 136.9 passer rating. He has completed 69.1 percent of his passes and has been sacked only once all season, a testament to the protection provided by the Vikings offensive line.

Kenji Bahar has enjoyed an equally impressive campaign for Rhein Fire, passing for 1,434 yards, 18 touchdowns and four interceptions with a 128.8 rating while completing 69.2 percent of his throws. The matchup between two of the league’s most efficient quarterbacks could ultimately decide the outcome.

Key matchups to watch

One area favors the Vikings entering the game. Rhein Fire have allowed opponents to score on 75 percent of their red-zone possessions, the lowest mark in the league. That presents a difficult challenge against a Vienna offense that converts 80.6 percent of its red-zone trips into touchdowns. Holmes has also become a dangerous rushing threat near the goal line with 13 carries inside the red zone and 12 from the goal line.

The ground game should also play a major role. Vienna averages 173.6 rushing yards per game behind Albert Wiesigstrauch, who averages 7.1 yards per carry, and Karri Pajarinen at 5.3 yards per attempt. Rhein Fire counter with Jonathan Scott, who averages 5.1 yards per carry with six rushing touchdowns while also contributing three receiving scores.

Turnovers could prove decisive as well. The Vikings lead the league at plus-14 in turnover differential with 16 takeaways and only two giveaways. Rhein Fire enter at plus-8 after forcing 15 turnovers while committing seven. With both teams playing outstanding football, another close contest could come down to whichever defense creates the game’s biggest takeaway.
