LIVESTREAM CFL Eastern Semifinal: Winnipeg Blue Bombers @ Toronto Argonauts, Oct. 31. 18:00 CET (6 pm, 12 noon ET)

For the second straight season, the Eastern Semi-Final presented by Wegovy will feature a crossover team from the West. And for a second consecutive year, that team is the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

The Bombers will visit Toronto on Semi-Final Saturday looking for a better result than last year’s crossover trip. 2025 saw Winnipeg fall 42-33 to the Montreal Alouettes in a highly entertaining game that ended the visitors’ run of consecutive Grey Cup appearances at five.

Winnipeg’s veteran core wants another shot at a championship. The upstart Argos are looking for a deep run as they return to the playoffs after a one-year hiatus.

Here are three storylines to keep an eye on at BMO Field on Saturday afternoon.

THE QUARTERBACK SITUATIONS

Things feel much more settled at quarterback in Toronto midweek than they did a few days ago.

Chad Kelly, fresh off signing a record five-year extension, looks like he’s good to go after be listed as a fully participant in practice Tuesday. Kelly left Toronto’s Week 20 matchup with Ottawa early in the first quarter with a lower body injury before resting in the team’s season finale last weekend.

And Kelly should be feeling good entering the first week of the postseason. Not only did the Argonauts put immense faith in him with this week’s contract extension, but he’s also coming off a career campaign. Kelly finished the regular season with 5,067 passing yards and 33 touchdowns, which are both career highs.

Winnipeg’s situation seems far more up in the air. Franchise pivot Zach Collaros didn’t take part in the first practice of the week on Tuesday after leaving last week’s win over BC in the third quarter. After sustaining a rib injury, Collaros gave way to Dru Brown who helped orchestrate 31 unanswered points in a playoff-clinching 34-10 win.

Collaros’s status is a major story to watch as we move closer to Saturday. The future Hall of Famer appeared in 12 games this season, throwing for 2,989 yards and 15 touchdowns. If Collaros can’t go, it’ll be a second career playoff start for Brown after being reacquired in a June trade with Ottawa.

THE CROSSOVER CRUX

Saturday will mark the 14th time we’ve seen the crossover mechanism in action and, as mentioned, the second consecutive year the Bombers have been involved. All 13 prior occasions have seen a West Division team head east with only five wins.

No crossover team has ever appeared in a Grey Cup, as every run has ended at latest in the Eastern Final. The last win from a crossover team came in 2019 when Edmonton bested Montreal 37-29 before bowing out to Hamilton the following week.

It’s typically been tough sledding for the team switching divisions and this will be Winnipeg’s first road game against the Argos this season. These teams split their two-game season series en route to identical 9-9 finishes, but neither game was played in Toronto. The FIFA World Cup forced both to be played at Princess Auto Stadium instead.

THE COACHES

There’s a lot to dig into here.

First, we’ve got a showdown between the CFL’s most and least tenured head coaches.

Mike O’Shea is in his 12th season leading the Bombers as he and his team make their 10th consecutive playoff appearance. O’Shea has five Grey Cup appearances and two championships on his coaching resume and is one of the most established minds in the game.

Conversely, Mike Miller is in his first season guiding the Argonauts in what’s his first-ever head coaching job. A football lifer, Miller was promoted from quarterbacks coach in the offseason and has done a nice job getting Toronto back to the playoffs after finishing 5-13 in 2025.

Let’s also not forget how the Argos’ coaching search played out last winter. General manager Michael “Pinball” Clemons told CFL.ca in January that O’Shea was the first choice to fill a vacant head coaching role. After O’Shea opted to remain with Winnipeg, conversations with players and fellow coaches pointed strongly to Miller as an internal hire.

Does that part truly impact Saturday’s showdown? Most likely not, but it still adds a little spice to what should be a very close matchup.
