LIVESTREAM CFL Western Semifinal: Saskatchewan Roughriders @ BC Lions, Oct. 31, 21:30 CET (9:30 pm, 4:30 pm ET)

There’s a chill in the air and it’s spooky season, but it’s not only kids in costumes looking for a treat instead of a trick.

The BC Lions host the Saskatchewan Roughriders at BC Place in the Western Semi-Final presented by Wegovy, as each are hoping their treat will be a trip to Edmonton for next week’s Western Final.

This weekend’s playoff matchup will be the fourth meeting between these two clubs in 2026. Saskatchewan took the first matchup in Week 2, a 31-27 victory. Then it was BC winning the next two in Week 12 (30-16) and Week 17 (31-24).

From familiar foes in the playoffs to dominant run defence to a pair of three-headed receiving monsters, the Western Semi-Final has a little bit of everything.

With no shortage of storylines to follow, here are three to watch in the Halloween showdown in Vancouver.

THEY MEET AGAIN

Stop me if you’ve heard this before: the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the BC Lions are meeting in the postseason.

For the third year in a row, the Lions and Riders will battle in a winner-takes-all matchup as the teams get ready for the Western Semi-Final at BC Place on Saturday afternoon.

Last season, the meeting was in the Western Final at Mosaic Stadium for an epic battle that ended with a last-minute touchdown that sent Saskatchewan to the 112th Grey Cup. It was also the birth of the epic “it’s our time!” back-and-forth between Nathan Rourke and Trevor Harris. 2024 saw the teams meet at Mosaic Stadium as well, with the Riders securing the victory and moving on to the Final before falling to the Bombers.

This time around, the Lions have home-field advantage. Buck Pierce’s team finished the regular season 6-3 at BC Place. Corey Mace’s team ended with a 3-5 road record.

With Saskatchewan winning the last two meetings in the playoffs, will Nathan Rourke and co. flip the script and take the third?

STOP THE RUN

The weather won’t matter in the Western Semi-Final, with BC Place the only indoor stadium in the CFL, but establishing a run game will still be imperative for each team to open up the passing game for both Harris and Rourke.

Both teams boast running backs that can change the game. The Lions are riding with the dual back set of Zander Horvath and James Butler. The Riders, on the other hand, lean on AJ Ouellette as their main tailback. Horvath was a touchdown machine in 2026 as he and Butler shared handoffs to keep defences guessing. Ouellette has struggled with injuries this season, but he can come alive in the playoffs, tallying 113 yards on 17 carries in last year’s Western Final and scoring a pair of touchdowns in 2024’s Semi-Final.

The thing is, though, these two teams’ run defences have been stifling.

The Lions, led by standout middle linebacker Darnell Sankey, only gave up 71.3 yards per game on the ground, the least in the CFL this season. Saskatchewan was just behind, allowing 83.7 rushing yards per game (third-least).

If each squad focusses on stopping the run, the quarterbacks will look to the air, which leads me to the next question…

WHICH THREE-HEADED MONSTER WILL FEAST?

What’s spookier than a three-headed monster?

Out of the three regular season meetings between these two clubs, only one game saw the trio of Kian Schaffer-Baker, Samuel Emilus and KeeSean Johnson hit the field at the same time.

It was back in Week 2, with the three pass-catchers contributing in a major way in their only win against the Leos in 2026. Emilus hauled in three touchdowns to go along with 91 yards on all six passes thrown his way. Johnson hauled in nine of 12 targets for 131 yards and Schaffer-Baker had 11 catches on 13 targets for 165 yards. Schaffer-Baker missed the Week 12 matchup and Emilus didn’t play in Week 17, both of which were losses.

With the three back together, can they replicate the success they found early in the season?

On the other side of the matchup is a trio of 1,000-yard receivers, Justin McInnis, Keon Hatcher Sr. and Jermaine Jackson, looking to outshine the ones wearing green and white. McInnis and Hatcher Sr. have been the heavy-hitters for the Lions for a while, but it was Jackson who exploded onto the scene this season.

In his second year with the Lions, Jackson had the second-most targets, with Rourke looking his way 100 times, and he recorded 1,018 receiving yards and four touchdowns. Though of the three of them, Jackson’s numbers have been more modest against the Riders in the regular season, with just four receptions for 46 yards in two outings. Hatcher Sr. scored three touchdowns against Saskatchewan, while McInnis got the yards, hauling in 287 across three games.

Which three-headed monster will be unleashed in the biggest game of the season?
