Dresden Monarchs (6-1) will travel Germany’s capital to take on the Berlin Rebels (1-7) in Mommsen stadium in this GFL North matchup.
These two teams met once already on July 10th with the Monarchs winning 49-20 in Dresden. This time around, the Rebels look to defend their home turf and finish the last stretch of the season on a high note.
The Monarch’s offense has been one of the league’s best putting up 430 yards and 42 points a game. Quarterback KJ Carta-Samuels has been the main catalyst as the former top high school prospect has grown into his potential in eastern Germany leading the Monarchs to an excellent season so far. Carta-Samuels favorite targets include former Michigan State (NCAA D1) receiver Darrell Stewart Jr, Czech talent Radim Kalous, and new signing Anthony Brooks. Expect the Monarchs to be slinging the rock all over the field today against a depleted Rebels secondary.

The Monarch’s defense did just enough to get the win last week as linebacker Andrew McElroy and Apelu Kaulana helped slow down a physical Lions run game. This week they’ll face another physical runner in Rebel’s tailback Caleb Stennis. Expect safeties Jason Selormy and Tim Hagmann to contain an inconsistent Berlin passing attack.
The Rebels passing attack is led by new quarterback Donovon Insom. Insom has thrown for 354 yards and three touchdowns in three games since arriving in late July. The 6’5 250 lb quarterback will no doubt show off his big arm and mobility as he’ll have to put up points against a well-coached and athletic Dresden defense. Expect Insom to target Jason Harris and Paul Morant often in this one.
Defensively the Rebels got a boost as Remi Daniels returned to the lineup bolstering the defensive line. Behind Daniels, veteran linebacker Rory Johnson has built a reputation as a sure tackle and intelligent defender forcing turnovers and flying to the ball play after play and year after year. Expect Johnson to stay busy today against a Monarchs passing attack that utilized the middle of the field often.
The Monarchs seem poised to make a run at this year’s title. After stumbling out of the gates with a week one loss Dresden has been nothing short of perfect, defeating talented teams such as the Potsdam Royals and New Yorker Lions while handling business as clear favorites against the Berlin Rebels and Kiel Baltic Hurricanes. However, this Rebels team has shown that they have no quit and are eager to celebrate a win with their home fans. Expect Berlin to give the Monarchs their best shot today.
