The conference-leading Allgäu Comets (8-1) will head to lower Bavaria to face the Straubing Spiders (2-7) with only three games left in the German Football League regular season.

After losing to the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns over a month ago, the Comets have since won three straight. Allgäu is looking to continue that momentum so they can head into the GFL playoffs as the South division’s top team.  Straubing, who are still mathematically able to make the playoffs despite sitting at 2-7, have lost four straight games but have a chance to break that losing streak and pull off a late-season upset.

After sneaking into the post season in 2022 with a win on the last weekend of action, Allgäu’s playoff outlook looks much different this year.

If the Comets are able to secure wins in their final three games (not an impossible task) they could wind up as the #1 seed out of the South Division for the first time since they entered the GFL in 2014.

But for now, the test that lies ahead is the Straubing Spiders. While the Spiders may not have had an impressive season so far, they definitely have the ability to push Allgäu to the very end, especially this late in the year.

While there is not much of a weakness that the Comets are presenting at this point of the season, Straubing has had the ability to push teams to their limits in the past this season.

If the Spiders can keep their offense on the field and keep the ball out of the hands of Comets quarterback Javarian Smith, they may be able to play spoiler in this regular season finale.
