The Pforzheim Wilddogs (6-2) welcome the undefeated Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns (7-0) to KRAMSKI Arena on Saturday in one of the biggest games of the German Football League season. With first place in the GFL South on the line and playoff positioning becoming increasingly important, both teams enter the matchup knowing the outcome could have a major impact on the stretch run.

Playoff stakes grow

The Wilddogs currently sit second in the GFL South and have an opportunity to tighten the race at the top of the standings. A victory would strengthen their push for home-field advantage in the playoffs while creating separation from the Ravensburg Razorbacks behind them.

Following their 8-10 loss in Ravensburg just before the summer break, head coach Michael Lang and his staff used the bye week to regroup and address the mistakes that surfaced in that game.

“We’re expecting an exciting game and a terrific atmosphere,” Lang said as he looked ahead to the matchup with the league leaders.

Battle in the trenches

One of the biggest challenges for the Wilddogs will be slowing down Kelley Joiner, who has established himself as one of the league’s most explosive running backs. Stopping the Unicorns ground attack will be a priority for a defense led by Antonio Alzheimer and Jeremy Conley, who will be counted on to limit Joiner’s big-play ability.

On the other side, Schwäbisch Hall knows the Wilddogs offense presents plenty of problems.

Quarterback in focus

Unicorns head coach Felix Brenner pointed to quarterback Dre’Harris as the centerpiece of the Pforzheim offense. His mobility, athleticism and ability to create explosive plays make him one of the most dangerous players in the league, while the Wilddogs continue to add new wrinkles to their offense each week.

There is also added motivation for the visitors. Last season, the Wilddogs edged the Unicorns 41-34 in overtime at the Pink Bowl, a result Brenner admitted still lingers in the minds of his team.

With an unbeaten record on the line, a playoff atmosphere expected at KRAMSKI Arena and two of the GFL South’s top teams meeting once again, this promises to be one of the weekend’s marquee matchups.
