The Regensburg Phoenix (4-5) host the Straubing Spiders (0-9) Saturday at Stadion am Weinweg in a German Football League South matchup that comes just one week after the Phoenix rolled to a 42-14 victory in Straubing.

For Regensburg, a second straight win over its East Bavarian opponent would continue a solid second half of the season, while the Spiders are still searching for their first victory with time running out in their fight to avoid relegation.

Phoenix looking for another fast start

The first meeting got away from Straubing quickly.

Regensburg built a 28-0 halftime lead before eventually finishing off the 42-14 victory. Quarterback Cameron Yowell threw five touchdown passes, with Nicolas Hayes catching four of them.

Running back Nebechi Abana gave the Phoenix another dimension, rushing for 129 yards and a touchdown.

Now Regensburg will try to reproduce that performance in its final home game of the regular season and improve on its 4-5 record.

Spiders need to clean up mistakes

The Spiders made life much harder on themselves in the first meeting.

Straubing committed three turnovers and was penalized 11 times for 159 yards, allowing the Phoenix to repeatedly take advantage of favorable situations.

The Spiders did find some offense after halftime, with Jordan Xavier Pouncey and Jvonte Kareem Davis scoring touchdowns, but by then the early deficit was too much to overcome.

Avoiding another slow start will be critical Saturday.

Straubing running out of chances

At 0-9, Straubing enters the weekend at the bottom of the GFL South. The Spiders have scored 143 points while allowing 377 and badly need a victory to give themselves some momentum in the relegation battle.

Head coach Sven Dorfner’s team will have to find a way to slow Yowell and Hayes while preventing Abana from controlling the game on the ground.

Regensburg aims for strong home finish

The Phoenix have moved away from the bottom of the standings and now have an opportunity to close their regular-season home schedule on a high note.

The challenge is straightforward: avoid giving Straubing any reason to believe this game will be different from last week.

For the Spiders, meanwhile, there is no shortage of motivation. They get an immediate opportunity to answer a 28-point loss — and another chance to finally put their first victory on the board.
