France and Germany face off today in Bordeaux for a chance to win fifth place in September against Italy. These are two of the continent’s traditionally most successful U19 nations.

France claimed third place in 2019, beating Denmark 42-15 to win the bronze medal at the tournament in Italy, having finished as runners-up in 2013 and 2011. Now they hope to beat a German team in front of a loud home crowd. head coach Emmanuel Maguet commands a French offense that will be led by quarterback Antione Lefevbre and dynamic running back Tom Blanc.

Germany returns to international competition after a far too long period of absence, having won their last European title more than a decade ago in 2008.

The German head coach Philipp Stursberg, was a linebacker on that 1998 championship-winning U19 team, sparking a fantastic career that culminated in NFL Europe. Stursberg commented on the huge matchup against France as the German National team finally makes its long awaited return to the international stage:

“We want to place the youth national team among the top teams in Europe again.”

The German squad features several young talents with NCAA aspirations as the offensive line features. On the outside receivers Justus Franke and 6’6 Clemens Richter are two playmakers too watch against a talented French secondary. Running back Justus Seelig of the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns and quarterback Sebastian Schulz hope to keep the German offense on schedule against an athletic French defense.
