UFL: Louisville Kings edge D.C. Defenders 33-30 in thrilling showdown

In a nail-biting contest, the Louisville Kings (4-4) defeated the D.C. Defenders (5-3) 33-30, marking their second consecutive win over the Defenders and keeping their playoff hopes alive. The Kings earned their first victory at Lynn Family Stadium, showcasing resilience and determination throughout the game.

Fast-paced start

The game kicked off with a 36-minute delay due to inclement weather, but once it began, the action was immediate. D.C. struck first when Xazavian Valladay returned the opening kickoff 54 yards, setting up a quick touchdown pass from Jordan Ta’amu to Ty Scott for a 7-0 lead. However, the Kings responded just as quickly. Tyler Hudson took the ensuing kickoff 92 yards to the house, tying the game at 7-7 just 31 seconds in.

The first quarter continued to deliver excitement as Louisville took the lead with a 39-yard field goal from Tanner Brown after Corey Mayfield Jr. intercepted Ta’amu, marking his league-leading fourth interception of the season. The Kings defense then stepped up, forcing a series of turnovers and keeping the pressure on D.C..

Injury and turnovers

The game took a significant turn when Ta’amu exited with an injury, forcing Spencer Sanders to step in as the new quarterback for the Defenders. Despite the change, D.C. managed to tie the game at 17-17 before halftime, thanks to a 21-yard touchdown run by Deon Jackson.

Before the break, Brown made history with a 60-yard field goal, the first of its kind for the Kings, giving them a 17-7 lead at one point. The first half was chaotic, featuring five turnovers, six sacks, and numerous penalties, setting the stage for a dramatic second half.

Second half surge

The Kings opened the second half strong, with Rogers connecting with Isaiah Winstead and Lucky Jackson, leading to another field goal from Brown, who tied the UFL single-season record with his 22nd field goal. However, D.C. answered back with a touchdown from Valladay, reclaiming the lead at 24-20.

Facing adversity, the Kings orchestrated a remarkable 16-play, 81-yard drive, culminating in a one-yard touchdown run by James Robinson, putting Louisville back in front at 26-24.

Final moments

With the game winding down, Rogers found Winstead for a 24-yard touchdown, extending the lead to 33-24. The Kings defense held strong, intercepting Sanders and forcing D.C. to scramble for a late score. Although the Defenders managed a touchdown from Jackson, they failed to convert a crucial three-point attempt, sealing the victory for Louisville.

The Kings finished with 134 rushing yards, while Jaheim Thomas led the defense with seven tackles. Valladay paced D.C. with 107 rushing yards, but the Defenders struggled on third down, converting just once in seven attempts. With this win, the Kings look forward to hosting the Dallas Renegades next week.
