Japan: Unbeaten Obic puts perfect start on the line against Fujifilm Ebina

The Obic Seagulls (5-0) take the X League Premier’s only perfect record into Ebina Sunday, where the league leaders face a Fujifilm Ebina Minerva AFC (2-2) team trying to regroup offensively and knock off an opponent that has found ways to win every week.

Kickoff is set for 14:00 at Ebina Sports Park Athletics Stadium, with Obic looking for a sixth straight victory and Fujifilm Ebina trying to bounce back from a 33-0 loss to the Panasonic Impulse.

Holley keeps Seagulls moving

Pierce Holley and the Obic passing game have been difficult to slow down. The Seagulls lead the league with 250.6 passing yards per game and rank second in scoring at 26.8 points a game.

Holley showed how dangerous that attack can be when Obic needed it most against the Elecom Kobe Finies.

After watching an 11-point fourth-quarter lead disappear, Holley took the Seagulls back downfield with his team trailing 21-17. He converted a fourth down to keep the drive alive before finding Yuki Sakuma for a 39-yard touchdown with 59 seconds left, giving Obic a 24-21 win.

Holley finished with 363 yards and two touchdowns, while Sakuma hauled in seven passes for 157 yards and the winning score.

Fujifilm Ebina faces quarterback question

The biggest issue for Fujifilm Ebina is rebuilding an offense that had been led by Chevin Cordeiro, who has been removed from the fall roster.

Tenki Arai saw action against Panasonic, completing three of seven passes for 61 yards. His best stretch came when he hit Shoei Koyama for 36 yards and Jo Kondo for 16 as Fujifilm Ebina drove to the Panasonic 17.

That opportunity ended with a missed field goal, and Minerva never seriously threatened again. The offense finished with just 68 total yards, including seven on the ground.

Obic defense brings another problem

Finding answers on offense becomes even tougher against an Obic defense that ranks second in the league in both rushing and passing yards allowed.

The Seagulls have also produced 11 takeaways, tied for the league lead. That ability to steal possessions gives Fujifilm Ebina’s reworked offense little room for mistakes.

Minerva has home field and a chance to make a major statement. But ending Obic’s unbeaten run will require finding offensive production against one of the league’s toughest defenses while keeping Holley and the Seagulls’ passing attack from taking control.

Sunday gives Fujifilm Ebina its shot.
