Marburg Mercenaries down Stuttgart Scorpions 31-7 in GFL South

The Stuttgart Scorpions have been handed their fourth loss within five games by the Hessian Marburg Mercenaries.

The Marburg Mercenaries took their third straight victory on Saturday with the 31-7 win at Stuttgart’s Gazi Stadion. The atmosphere for home crowd of 1,493 spectators was disappointed as the Scorpions took there fourth defeat in the young 2017 GFL season.

The team of head coach Fabian Birkholz never got into a rhythm, as the guests from Marburg managed to win 31-7 with a solid performance.

The Scorpions tried but ultimately failed to establish their running game and had very little success with their passing attack as well, all due to a well balanced and prepared Mercenaries defense that shut down Stuttgart’s offense.

The offense of the Marburg Mercenaries, who was also most of the time not able to get something going, had individual playmakers who flashed their skill on various occasions. Running back Andreus Lindley scored twice and even completed a touchdown pass in a reliever role for injured quarterback Emanuel Lewis. Philip Lanieri also ran for one touchdown in the second quarter. These efforted, coupled with four field goals and three PATs by kicker Hendrik Schwarz and two interceptions by Lanieri, was all the Mercenaries needed to guarantee victory. The Mercenaries led 31-0 late in the game.

A touchdown by Connor Sullivan to receiver Robin Balschun (PAT William Jansen) late in the fourth quarter was nothing but cosmetic.

Stuttgart is now seventh in the GFL South division and has to play the Mercenaries again next week already, a game that will be pivotal in determining if the Scorpions have any chances left to get into the playoff spot race.
