Mexico City Mexicas dominate as LFA playoff picture crystallizes

The Mexico City Mexicas (7-0) head into the final week of the Liga de Fútbol Americano Profesional (LFA) regular season as the league’s undisputed powerhouse, securing the top playoff seed and home-field advantage after a Week 7 victory over the Saltillo Dinos. They join the Monterrey Osos (6-1) and Chihuahua Caudillos (5-2) as the three confirmed postseason teams, with one remaining spot up for grabs among four contenders.

Mexicas lock down top seed
Undefeated through seven games, the Mexicas clinched the league’s best record and will host the fourth-seeded team in the semifinals. Their dominant campaign, anchored by a defense allowing just 14.3 points per game, positions them as favorites for the Mexico VIII Bowl. The Saltillo Dinos (3-4), once playoff hopefuls, now face elimination after falling to the Mexicas.

Osos, Caudillos secure semifinal hosting rights
The Monterrey Osos sealed the No. 2 seed with a Week 7 win over the Chihuahua Caudillos, earning the right to host their semifinal matchup. Despite the loss, the Caudillos locked in the No. 3 spot and will travel to Monterrey for the playoffs. Both teams rely on balanced offenses, with the Osos averaging 28.1 points and the Caudillos boasting a league-leading 312 rushing yards per game.

Four-team scramble for final postseason berth
The Puebla Arcángeles (3-4) control their destiny despite a Week 7 loss to the Mexico City Raptors (2-5). A win against the Osos in Week 8 would clinch the fourth seed. The Querétaro Gallos Negros (3-4) and Saltillo Dinos (3-4) remain alive but need wins and Arcángeles’ loss to advance. The Gallos Negros host the Raptors, while the Dinos face a resurgent Guadalajara Reyes (1-6) squad under new coaching leadership. Tiebreaker scenarios, including head-to-head records and points differential, loom if multiple teams finish 4-4.

Mexico VIII Bowl set for Puebla
The LFA confirmed the Mexico VIII Bowl will take place July 12 at the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla’s Olympic Stadium. The venue hosted the 2023 title game, where the Caudillos fell to the Mexicas 24-17. With the Mexicas aiming for back-to-back championships and the Osos seeking their first title since 2021, the semifinals kick off July 5-6.
