Mexico’s Monterrey Fundidores sign South Alabama RB Xavier Johnson

The Monterrey Fundidores, who play in Mexico’s Liga De Futbol Americano (LFA), have signed running back Xavier Johnson.

The 27 year old, 5’11”, 190 pound native of Tampa, Florida had signed to play in Germany’s GFL2 with the Straubing Spiders but the season was canceled. During his four year career at South Alabama (NCAA Div. 1) who play in the Sun Belt Conference (2014-2017), he rushed for a total of 2,670 yards and 24 touchdowns while returning 51 kickoffs for 1,220 yards and two touchdowns.

AFI: How did the Fundidores find you?

Johnson: The Fundidores reached me because I told a friend I was looking for a new home to play next year so he gave me the coach’s social media and it went from there.

AFI: What was the last team you played for?

Johnson: The last team I signed to play for was the Straubing Spiders in Germany but the season was canceled this year due to the coronavirus.

AFI: What do you think you bring to the team?

Johnson: I think I bring energy, motivation, and just being able to build a brotherhood with each other to help win a championship trophy.

AFI: What does your family think of all of this?

Johnson: My family is excited because I’m still able to live out my dream professionally and travel the world so if I’m happy they are as well.
