NCAA Div. II: California Vulcans hold off Edinboro comeback to secure PSAC West victory

The California Vulcans (3-3, 1-2) built an 18-point halftime lead before holding off a determined comeback by the visiting Edinboro Fighting Scots to claim a 30-20 victory Saturday at Adamson Stadium in California, Pennsylvania, in NCAA Division II Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.

Quarterback Eric Gibson Jr. threw for 316 yards and three touchdowns as the Vulcans extended their home winning streak against Edinboro to 11 games.

Gibson sparks fast start

California wasted little time taking control, scoring touchdowns on its first two possessions.

Gibson connected with Lloyd Penn on a 15-yard scoring pass before finding Kenny Lewis IV from 16 yards out to establish a 14-0 first-quarter lead.

The Fighting Scots answered with a three-yard touchdown run, but the Vulcans responded with a 17-play drive capped by Harry Radcliffe’s 37-yard field goal.

A blocked punt by Amory Thompson then set up Gibson’s seven-yard touchdown pass to Amire Spencer, sending California into halftime leading 24-6.

Edinboro rallies after halftime

The Fighting Scots capitalized on a California fumble to score early in the third quarter, then added a 13-yard touchdown pass to close the gap to 24-20.

Suddenly, a comfortable Vulcans lead had become a four-point game.

Radcliffe restored some breathing room with a 27-yard field goal before Ruben Gordon Jr. intercepted an Edinboro pass deep in California territory.

Defense and special teams finish the job

The Vulcans defense forced another turnover on downs late in the fourth quarter, allowing Radcliffe to seal the victory with a 36-yard field goal.

Gibson completed 32 of 45 passes without an interception, while Penn and Spencer each caught seven passes. Jay Pearson added 93 receiving yards, and linebacker Wilfredo Diaz led the defense with 14 tackles.

California, which converted all six red-zone opportunities into points, now travels to face the Clarion Golden Eagles on October 17. Meanwhile, the Fighting Scots visit Lock Haven, also on Saturday, October 17.
