NFL safety violations put three players on suspension track

The NFL’s new approach to repeat safety violations is already in play after three players picked up qualifying fines during the opening week of the season.

Miami Dolphins cornerback Chris Johnson was hit hardest financially, receiving a $17,911 fine for a hip-drop tackle. Buffalo Bills defensive back Sam Franklin was assessed $9,425 for a blindside block, while a hit on a defenseless player cost Green Bay Packers defensive back Evan Williams $7,087.

Repeat offenses now carry bigger consequences

Those penalties matter beyond the money.

Under the policy introduced for 2026, three violations of the same designated safety rule result in a suspension. Horse-collar tackles and launching are also covered, meaning players can begin accumulating violations in five different categories.

All three Week 1 fines can be appealed.

There is also money to be recovered. If a player goes through the remainder of the season without committing a second violation of that particular rule, half of his original fine will be returned.
