NFL’s International Player Pathway program welcomes Class of 2026

The NFL has unveiled its latest group of global talent with the announcement of the 2026 International Player Pathway program class, featuring 13 athletes from 10 different countries who will pursue their dreams of playing professional American football. This initiative continues the league’s commitment to discovering and developing international athletes, providing a structured path to the NFL for players from diverse sporting backgrounds.

Global talent on display
The class of 2026 represents a wide range of nations and athletic experiences. From Australia and New Zealand comes multiple participants including Kaia ClarkinKaylan Faumui, and Jarrod Gray, while Germany’s Felix Lepper and Japan’s Kansei Matsuzawa add to the international flavor. African nations are particularly well-represented with participants from Nigeria (Collins ArogunjoUar BernardMichael DaramolaChibuike MaduAnjola Oketola), Kenya (Joshua Weru), and Seydou Traore who has connections to Algeria, Ivory Coast, and the United Kingdom. This diverse group brings experience from various sports including rugby, basketball, Gaelic football, and track and field.

Program structure and opportunity
Established in 2017, the IPP program provides selected athletes with intensive training and development opportunities. Beginning in January 2026, the participants will spend 10 weeks at X3 Performance and Physical Therapy in Fort Myers, Florida, where they’ll receive comprehensive football training both on the field and in classroom settings. The program culminates with a showcase event where athletes demonstrate their skills in front of NFL team scouts. According to NFL Director of International Football Development Patrick Long, this program represents “a key component of the growth of our game globally” that has already produced numerous success stories.

Pathway to the NFL
The program offers multiple routes to NFL rosters. Players may be signed as free agents, selected in the 2026 NFL Draft if eligible, or benefit from special roster provisions designed specifically for international players. Each NFL team receives one roster exemption for qualifying international players from offseason programs through final roster cuts. Additionally, a 17th practice squad spot is reserved specifically for international athletes across all 32 teams. These accommodations have proven successful, with 70 international players having signed with NFL teams since the program’s inception and 22 currently on NFL rosters.

Proven success stories
The IPP program has already produced several notable NFL players who have made significant impacts. Australia’s Jordan Mailata has become a starting offensive tackle for the Philadelphia Eagles, while Germany’s Jakob Johnson has carved out a successful career as a fullback. Other success stories include Efe Obada (United Kingdom), Sammis Reyes (Chile), Thomas Odukoya (Netherlands), and recent additions like Ireland’s Charlie Smyth and Nigeria’s CJ Okoye. These players demonstrate the program’s effectiveness in developing international talent capable of competing at the highest level of professional football.

As the class of 2026 begins their journey, they follow in the footsteps of athletes who have proven that the pathway from international sports to the NFL is not only possible but increasingly successful. With the league’s continued investment in global player development, the pipeline of international talent shows no signs of slowing down.
