CFL: Ottawa REDBLACKS add versatile Japanese/Global linebacker Les Maruo

The Ottawa REDBLACKS have strengthened their defensive depth with the signing of Japanese linebacker Les Maruo for the 2025 Canadian Football League season. The 29-year-old Yokkaichi native brings a blend of CFL experience and international pedigree to Ottawa’s roster.

A Global Football Journey
Maruo, a 6’0”, 230-pound linebacker, began his professional career with Japan’s X-League team, the Asahi Soft Drink Challengers, before entering the CFL. Selected fourth overall by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the 2021 Global Draft, he appeared in 38 games over three seasons, recording 24 defensive tackles, 20 special teams tackles, and two sacks. In 2024, Maruo joined the Edmonton Elks, adding eight special teams tackles across nine games.

Collegiate and Developmental Roots
Maruo’s football journey spans continents. After moving to Wichita, Kansas, at age nine, he starred at Goddard High School, posting 79 tackles as a senior. He honed his skills at Hutchinson Community College (2014–2015), tallying 107 tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss, and two sacks in 22 games. Transferring to the University of Texas-San Antonio (2017–2018), he started all 12 games as a senior, finishing with 98 tackles, six tackles for loss, and 3.5 sacks over 23 collegiate appearances.

Immediate Impact Potential
Maruo’s versatility on defense and special teams aligns with Ottawa’s need for reliable depth. His familiarity with the CFL’s pace and physicality, combined with a proven work ethic, positions him to compete for rotational snaps. The REDBLACKS will leverage his disciplined tackling and adaptability as they aim to improve their defensive efficiency in 2025.

Strategic International Recruitment
Maruo’s signing underscores Ottawa’s commitment to scouting global talent. His unique path—from Japan to Kansas high school and Texas college football to Japan’s X-League and the CFL—adds a dynamic layer to the team’s defensive schemes, offering coaches flexibility in situational packages.
