Pforzheim Wilddogs defeat Straubing Spiders 27-9 in GFL showdown

The Pforzheim Wilddogs (2-1) claimed a solid 27-9 road victory over the Straubing Spiders (0-2) in the Spiders first home game of the new Effect Energy GFL season. The game was marked by a pivotal injury to starting quarterback David Perkins, which shifted the momentum in favor of the Wilddogs.

Spiders start strong

In front of an enthusiastic crowd at the Donausportzentrum Peterswöhrd, the Spiders came out firing on all cylinders. Their defense looked much improved compared to their previous game, putting the Wilddogs in tough situations early on. The Spiders controlled the pace of the game with a long opening drive, highlighted by key plays from wide receiver Anthony Earl Green Jr. Eventually, Perkins connected with Deniz Yilmaz for a touchdown, giving Straubing an early 6-0 lead after a blocked extra point.

Injury changes the course of the game

However, the tide turned with 6:43 left in the second quarter when Perkins suffered an injury and had to leave the field. Backup quarterback Alexander Biebl stepped in, bringing a calm presence to the offense despite the challenging circumstances. Head Coach Bence Lukacs praised his team’s resilience in handling the situation, noting the defense’s improvement and the offensive adjustments made on the fly.

The Wilddogs seized the opportunity following Perkins’ injury. A deep 60-yard touchdown pass from Dre Harris to AJ Coons put Pforzheim ahead 7-6. Shortly after, the Wilddogs forced a fumble on the Spiders’ return, allowing Harris to score again on a quarterback keeper, extending their lead to 13-6. Just before halftime, Harris tossed another touchdown pass, this one to Luca Faschians, making it 19-6 at the break.

Fighting spirit gives courage for the coming weeks

The Spiders came out of halftime with renewed energy, executing a successful onside kick. Behind Green’s powerful ground game, they advanced to the Wilddogs’ 15-yard line. However, a critical fourth-down stop by Pforzheim defensive back Nick Olivier halted their momentum. The Spiders managed to boot a field goal, narrowing the gap to 19-9.

But the Wilddogs quickly responded with a spectacular 60-yard touchdown run after a catch by Luca Hirschberger, pushing the score to 27-9. The Pforzheim defense held strong in the final quarter, preventing any further scoring from the Spiders.

The Spiders will look to bounce back in their next game against the Saarland Hurricanes, while the Wilddogs prepare for a challenging matchup against the Ravensburg Razorbacks.
