Potsdam Royals crush Braunschweig Lions 61-0 behind dominant ground game

The Potsdam Royals (9-1) steamrolled the Braunschweig Lions (3-8) 61-0 Saturday at Eintracht Stadium, riding a devastating rushing attack and another lights-out defensive performance to their third consecutive shutout in the German Football League. The defending champions piled up 501 yards of offense and scored all nine of their touchdowns on the ground while holding the Lions to just 178 total yards.

Kyei strikes immediately

It took Potsdam only two offensive plays to get rolling.

Chrisman Kyei ripped off a 68-yard run on the opening play and followed it with an 11-yard touchdown. The Royals defense quickly gave the ball back to the offense when Devin Hembry intercepted Ryon Thomas, setting up Heiko Bals’ four-yard touchdown run.

Kyei then broke loose for a 78-yard touchdown, and Joost Bohnhorst’s two-point conversion pushed the lead to 20-0 before the first quarter was over.

Royals run wild

The Braunschweig defense never found an answer for the Potsdam running game.

The Royals finished with 380 rushing yards on just 32 attempts, averaging 11.9 yards per carry. Kyei was the centerpiece, exploding for 254 yards and four touchdowns on only 10 carries.

Bals scored twice, while Bohnhorst, Elias Güther and Peter Martin also reached the end zone as Potsdam produced all nine of its touchdowns on the ground.

Richter keeps offense moving

With Bay Harvey unavailable due to his commitments with the Swiss national flag football team, Moritz Pharrell-Richter took over at quarterback and did exactly what the Royals needed.

Richter completed 11 of 17 passes for 111 yards without an interception, spreading the ball to seven receivers while allowing the running game to do most of the damage.

Defense extends shutout streak

While the offense piled up points, the Potsdam defense continued an impressive run of its own.

After blanking the Hildesheim Invaders and Düsseldorf Panther, the Royals recorded their third straight shutout and have now gone 12 consecutive quarters without allowing a point.

The Lions managed only 24 rushing yards on 31 attempts and converted three of 13 third downs. Hunter Hewitt, Giorgius Tarlas and Jasper Kropp each recorded a sack.

Turnovers add to Braunschweig’s problems

Potsdam also won the turnover battle decisively. Hembry’s first-quarter interception was followed by two recovered fumbles in the second half, while the Royals played the entire game without giving the ball away.

The loss dropped Braunschweig to 3-8 while pushing Potsdam to 9-1. The Royals now return home for their final two regular-season games against the Kiel Baltic Hurricanes and Munich Cowboys, carrying three straight shutouts and plenty of momentum toward the playoffs.
