Regensburg Phoenix defeat Allgäu Comets 29-18 for second win of GFL season

The Regensburg Phoenix (2-5) put together one of their strongest performances of the season Saturday, defeating the Allgäu Comets (1-6) 29-18 on the road in the German Football League. In a game interrupted by a thunderstorm and filled with momentum swings, the Phoenix relied on a powerful rushing attack, timely takeaways and a composed finish to secure their second victory of the year.

Phoenix answer every challenge

The Phoenix received the opening kickoff and moved the ball well before Silas Arnold halted the drive with an interception. The defense responded immediately, forcing a quick stop before the offense settled into its rhythm.

Nebechi Abana capped the next possession with a touchdown run, and Dominik Laßmann added the extra point to give Regensburg a 7-0 lead.

Early in the second quarter, thunderstorms forced a lengthy delay that briefly disrupted the flow of the game. After play resumed, Regensburg appeared ready to extend its lead, but a blocked field goal gave the Comets excellent field position. Brad Jones quickly took advantage, connecting with Gabe Quigley for a touchdown, although the two-point conversion failed, leaving the Phoenix ahead 7-6.

The visitors answered immediately. Abana powered into the end zone for his second rushing touchdown before Nicolas Hayes converted the two-point attempt to stretch the lead to 15-6. Allgäu responded with another touchdown pass from Jones to Quigley, trimming the halftime deficit to 15-12.

Defense changes the game

The turning point came after halftime as the Phoenix defense repeatedly shut down promising Comets drives.

A forced fumble gave Regensburg possession before Matthew Hull and Nico Ziaja each intercepted Jones, taking away any chance for the home team to build momentum.

The takeaways consistently gave the offense favorable field position, allowing the Phoenix to dictate the pace of the game through a physical rushing attack.

Ground game seals the victory

Abana remained the centerpiece of the offense throughout the afternoon, repeatedly finding running lanes and keeping the chains moving. His two rushing touchdowns helped establish the tempo, while Hayes added another touchdown to increase the lead to 22-12.

Although the Allgäu Comets pulled within 22-18 on Jones’ four-yard touchdown pass to Benedikt Schulz, Regensburg answered with its longest and most important drive of the game.

Quarterback Cameron Yowell capped the possession with a touchdown run before Laßmann’s extra point restored an 11-point advantage with just 1:29 remaining.

Important step forward

The victory showcased the formula the Regensburg Phoenix have been searching for all season.

The offense controlled the clock behind Abana’s running, the defense forced key turnovers at critical moments, and the team never lost its composure despite the weather delay and Allgäu’s repeated comeback attempts.

For the Phoenix, the 29-18 victory provides valuable momentum heading into the final stretch of the season, while the Comets were left to rue missed opportunities despite another productive passing performance from Jones and Quigley.
