Rhein Fire add former Hamilton Tiger-Cats defensive back Patrick Burke Jr.

The Rhein Fire have strengthened their secondary by signing former Hamilton Tiger-Cats defensive back Patrick Burke Jr. as the club prepares for the stretch run of the American Football League Europe season. Burke replaces defensive back Justin Howell, who recently left the team for personal reasons, giving the Fire another experienced option as it continues its push toward the playoffs.

CFL experience

Burke arrives after spending the past three seasons with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the Canadian Football League. The 26-year-old, 6-foot, 200-pound defensive back from Etobicoke, Ontario, was selected in the fourth round (29th overall) of the 2023 CFL Draft and appeared in 34 regular-season games. He finished his CFL career with five defensive tackles and 18 special teams tackles while earning a reputation as a dependable contributor on special teams and a reliable depth player in the secondary.

Before beginning his professional career, Burke starred at Wilfrid Laurier University. During his collegiate career with the Golden Hawks, he recorded 55 tackles, four interceptions and one forced fumble, earning Second Team OUA All-Star honors in his final season in 2022 before entering the CFL Draft.

Versatile defender

Canadian evaluators have long praised Burke’s physical style of play, tackling ability and football IQ. Rather than being known as a pure lockdown corner, he has built his reputation as a versatile defensive back capable of lining up at multiple positions while also making a consistent impact on special teams.

Those qualities should make him an excellent fit for a Rhein Fire defense that has been one of the strongest units in the AFLE this season.

Playoff reinforcement

The signing is about more than simply replacing a departing player. It gives the Fire proven professional experience, added depth in the secondary and another dependable contributor on special teams heading into the most important part of the season.
