Saarland Hurricanes force seven turnovers in 46-21 win over Allgäu Comets

The Saarland Hurricanes (2-8) turned seven Allgäu Comets turnovers into a convincing 46-21 victory Saturday at Ellenfeldstadion, giving the Hurricanes a much-needed win in their final home game while dropping the Comets to 1-9 in the German Football League.

Comets strike first

Allgäu could hardly have asked for a better opening. Quarterback Brad Jones moved the offense downfield before finding Otis Newbury for a four-yard touchdown pass, and Sven Köppl’s extra point made it 7-0.

The Comets then recovered a Gabriel Cunningham fumble on Saarland’s first possession, but what looked like an opportunity to take early control instead became the turning point.

Sebastian Kyereh intercepted Jones and returned the ball 32 yards, setting up Malcolm King’s tying touchdown. Two more Allgäu interceptions followed during the opening quarter, and the Hurricanes began taking advantage of the short fields. Cunningham connected with Ole Sebald for a 27-yard touchdown as Saarland moved ahead 14-7.

Hurricanes take control

The Hurricanes kept rolling in the second quarter, extending their advantage to 28-7 before Allgäu finally answered.

A 48-yard kickoff return by Chris Lipsey gave the Comets excellent field position, and Jones eventually found Gabe Quigley for a touchdown on fourth down. Lipsey ran in the two-point conversion, cutting the Saarland lead to 28-15 at halftime.

Youngblood delivers the big play

Allgäu recovered another Saarland fumble immediately after halftime and started at the Hurricanes’ 28, but another interception wiped out the opportunity.

This time Saarland made the Comets pay in spectacular fashion. The Hurricanes drove 98 yards, with Joshua Youngblood breaking loose for a 66-yard touchdown run that pushed the advantage to 36-15.

Quigley later took over at quarterback and connected with Newbury for a 32-yard touchdown, Newbury’s second of the game, bringing Allgäu within 36-21.

Turnovers prove costly

That was as close as the Comets would get. Saarland added a 29-yard field goal before another Allgäu fumble led to King’s second touchdown and the final 46-21 margin.

The Comets finished with 254 yards of offense but committed seven turnovers — five interceptions and two lost fumbles. Saarland turned those mistakes into repeated scoring opportunities and never surrendered control after falling behind 7-0.

Newbury led Allgäu with five catches for 73 yards and two touchdowns, while Quigley caught seven passes for 57 yards and a score before completing three of six passes for 60 yards and another touchdown.

The win moved the Hurricanes to 2-8 and kept them ahead of Allgäu in the GFL South standings. The two teams will meet again in Kempten before the regular season ends, with their battle near the bottom of the division still very much alive.
