Saskatchewan Roughriders’ head coach Craig Dickenson feels ‘quite strongly’ 2021 CFL season will start in August

Saskatchewan Roughriders head coach Craig Dickenson can see kick-off happening on the current timeline for the 2021 season.

Dickenson disagreed with the notion that there is a lack of confidence in the CFL playing football this year.

“I believe we will play and I feel quite strongly that the season will start in August. As long as we keep getting our vaccines, we are going to play!!”

The last time his Riders were on the field quarterback Cody Fajardo hit the goal post on third and goal with a pass intended for Kyran Moore in the end zone during the West Final. The turnover on downs allowed the Winnipeg Blue Bombers to win the game and go on to hoist the Grey Cup in November 2019.

Saskatchewan surely wants a shot at redemption after living through the Bombers being reigning CFL champions for over a year-and-a-half. The green and white placed first in the West Division during the regular season with a 13-5 record. According to Bodog Canada, the Riders are the co-favourites to win the West if football is played this year.

The CFL has delayed the start date with a 14-game schedule targeted to kick-off on August 5, culminating in a currently planned December 12 Grey Cup. For the timeline to be met, the league requires ‘a significant number of fans’ to be allowed in stadiums by municipal, provincial, and federal governments.

The league and union began meetings during the second week of February with a focus on playing football this year. The two sides have submitted return to play health and safety plans to various levels of government in Canada and are working to finalize the protocols with six provinces before getting the final stamp from the nation’s capital.
