Silesia Rebels Katowice hold off Olsztyn Lakers to advance to Polish Football League semifinals

Second-seeded Silesia Rebels Katowice built a commanding first-half lead and then held off a late rally from the seventh-seeded Olsztyn Lakers to earn a 31-21 quarterfinal victory and advance to the Polish Football League semifinals.

The Rebels appeared to have the game well in hand after taking a 28-7 lead into halftime, but Olsztyn kept battling until the closing minutes before running out of time.

Fast start

Silesia struck first when Jeremiah Tucker connected with Ryan Wakeling on a nine-yard touchdown pass to open the scoring.

The Lakers answered early in the second quarter as Cyprian Wiącek broke loose for an 18-yard touchdown to tie the game at 7-7.

That would be the last time the contest was close before halftime.

Tucker regained the lead with a one-yard quarterback sneak before Jakub Kapuściński added another one-yard touchdown run. Tucker then capped a dominant second quarter by finding Mateusz Szurpicki on a six-yard scoring pass, giving the Rebels a 28-7 advantage at the break.

Lakers fight back

Ryan Wakeling stretched the lead to 31-7 with a 23-yard field goal in the third quarter, but Olsztyn refused to fold.

Quarterback Artur Pazia sparked the comeback with a 60-yard touchdown pass to Daniel Viger before the duo connected again on a five-yard scoring strike later in the fourth quarter. The first touchdown was followed by a successful two-point conversion to Wiącek, while the second two-point attempt came up short, leaving the Lakers 10 points behind.

The late surge wasn’t enough, however, as Silesia ran out the clock to secure its place in the semifinals.

Tucker accounted for three touchdowns, throwing scoring passes to Wakeling and Szurpicki while adding another on the ground. Wakeling also contributed a field goal and three successful extra points. For Olsztyn, Pazia threw two touchdown passes to Viger, while Wiącek scored once on the ground and added the two-point conversion.
