Undefeated Porvoon Butchers, Seinäjoki Crocodiles clash in Maple League showdown
The Porvoon Butchers (3-0) host the Seinäjoki Crocodiles (3-0) Friday night in one of the biggest games of the early Finnish Maple League season as the league’s last two unbeaten teams square off in a rematch of last year’s Maple Bowl.
Both clubs enter with perfect records, but neither has enjoyed an easy path through the opening weeks, setting the stage for what could be another tightly contested battle.
Butchers looking for another statement
The defending champions have stayed unbeaten, but the road has been far bumpier than it was a year ago.
After opening with a comfortable win over the Tampere Saints, the Butchers had to grind out one-score victories over the East City Giants and Kuopio Steelers. Those close finishes have shown the defending champions can win different kinds of games, even if they haven’t consistently dominated.
Christian Powell has carried much of the offensive load, while quarterback Donovan Isom has been just as dangerous extending plays with his legs as he has through the air. Although Porvoon features one of the league’s deepest receiving groups, newcomer JJ Jones has played a relatively small role so far.
One milestone is also within reach. Mikko Seppänen enters the game with 9,971 career all-purpose yards. With 29 more yards, he would become the first Finnish player to reach the 10,000-yard mark.
Defense faces tough assignment
While the offense has delivered in key moments, the Butchers know their defense has room to improve.
The unit has allowed 1,060 total yards through three games, an average of 353 per contest. Even so, it has consistently come up with impact plays.
Dal’Mont Gourdine and Timi Nuikka have anchored the defense, while Kaapo Viuha has already collected four interceptions. Up front, Porvoon leads the league with 11 sacks, creating constant pressure on opposing quarterbacks.
The secondary, however, will be without Micky Kyei for Friday night’s matchup.
Crocodiles seek revenge
The Crocodiles have also opened 3-0, although their performances suggest there’s still another level they can reach.
Christopher Fowler directs an offense built around balance. Arttu Blomqvist has rushed for 282 yards and three touchdowns, while Maurico Porcha has matched him with 273 receiving yards and three scores. Aleksi Peltokangas, Alex Jämsen and Justus Virtanen have all topped 100 receiving yards, giving Fowler plenty of options.
The biggest question may be whether the offensive line can handle Porvoon’s relentless pass rush, especially with injuries affecting the unit.
Defensively, Saidou Jallow has been the leader with 16.6 tackles, while Charles Akanno remains capable of changing a game with a big play.
The Crocodiles last defeated the Butchers in the 2024 season opener. Since then, Porvoon has had the upper hand, including a decisive 52-21 victory in last season’s Maple Bowl. Friday offers Seinäjoki a chance to change that narrative in what promises to be one of the biggest games of the Maple League season so far.
